Re: Long tailed Blues in Kent

Great to hear of the success stories of the weekend. I didn't make the trip on Sunday as conditions didn't look great. Gutted to be in Kent and working all day in the glorious sun today! Have to go back to Kent Monday for work so may go a day early if conditions look favourable. Lee3764 - I was spea...

Re: Still warm in Marseilles

Super caterpillar image! I got back from 2 weeks in Corsica on Sunday. The place is alive with 2 Tailed Pasha. I thought Kefalonia was good but Corsica is crawling with them. Apart from in the mountains where there were stacks of Grayling species, everywhere else I'd say they were the commonest bute...

Re: Long tailed Blues in Kent

I'm working in Kent Saturday and Monday with Sunday Free so planning on visiting as I'm only an hour away. Forecast is sunny but breezy. Hopefully they can find some shelter there somewhere :)

Re: Butterfly photos

Also, the bigger the camera sensor is the more diffused the background (and less depth of field) there will be, so for full frame cameras say you get a cleaner background but your depth of field is not so good . For a tiny sensor compact you get more depth of field than you know what to do with and ...

Re: Butterfly photos

The only real trick is to just find the butterflies with the clean backgrounds. If the background is a mess I just don't take the photo, or if I do it's usually deleted afterwards. When butterflies are roosting, just settling down for the night or warming up in the morning it's pretty easy really, j...

Re: Two-tailed Pasha lunch break

And if you need a window cleaner I'm your man! Saw my first ever 2 tailed pashas in Kefalonia this year. One butterfly I've been dying to see for several years. Never seen them in Provence (I've passed Vitrolles many times from the airport!) and been to several other places at just before or j...

Re: August 2013

Exactly - thanks Debbie! As such, this is very interesting indeed, and suggest you put the photo in the species-specific album :) Cheers, - Pete I also had large whites laying on nasturtiums the other week (they smothered them!) I noticed one of these clumps was unusually laid on the upper side of ...

Re: Butterfly size from a photo?

My Canon 10D used to show the focus distance in the Exif info but latter models didn't include it it seems :(

Have to say I was sometimes a little sceptical of what the figure was sometimes though. Maybe that was just for the badly out of focus ones!

Re: waiting game

Hi Pete,

I'd noticed the site had become quite slow for the past week or so. Seems pretty good today though so looks like the problem is cured :)

I'd say that for that money it's not worth the hassle. Just bin it and buy a new one from Amazon for a tenner!

Re: Spring 2013 Competition

Not the biggest turnout but all cracking images! :) Took me a while to find the mud puddling silver studded blue. Was sure I hadn't seen one of those in the entries lol! Think my favourite of the bunch was Ben Kitely's Scarce Swallowtail. I've never managed to find one in such perfect condition, let...

Re: Hoggers

Oh I remember those Orelstone mozzies very well. The bites from those come up pretty good!! Not been there since moving to Hampshire 3 years ago. I'm working in Ashford for a few days starting next Friday so might have to make a visit or two as I pass it on the way to my mum's where I'll be staying....

It also probably didn't have a canon uk warranty. Probably not an issue in most cases and I must admit the potential savings make it look worth a punt.

Re: Canon 7D

Are they serious £699 for a 7D? Even if that is ex VAT it's still £200 less than the next cheapest seller. Something sounds a bit suspicious there surely??

All their gear looks suspiciously cheap actually. Just did a quick search on the web and they deal in grey imports it looks like.

Re: Bird for ID, anyone?

I did spend a couple of hours searching for marsh fritillaries near glengorm castle when I was there in June but no joy. Weather was not the best though. Interestingly i noticed there was to be a butterfly conservation walk there a week later... I did get excited briefly when I found a couple of ora...

According to this Blog ( http://treshnishbirdlog.blogspot.co.uk/2010_06_01_archive.html ) they get them in the North West from time to time. The blog is a pretty good read for all widlife on the island including the buterflies. Sounds like the guy knows where to find a few of the islands raraties! T...

Think that's how they all came about on the mainland too. Unfortunately preserving the rights of the mink kinda messed things up for some of our native species!

Re: Any Fish experts? sorry not a BF id Question

I'd also go with a female Tench. Bit of a lost cause trying to swallow it but Cormorants are unfortunately well known for taking on fish larger than they can manage.

I remember pike fishing once and one popped up right next to my float with a 3lb pike!

Re: Annual 2012 Competition

Thanks David. The butterfly is a female. Only the female has that amount of orange in the forewing upperside. I also got some shots of the wing upper sides I could check to be sure. Sooty.jpg With From below, with the bacllighting, you get the orange on the underside accentuated by the orange coming...
