Faulty SanDisk SDHC 8GB card

Post by Ian Pratt »

Last May whilst on holiday in the South of France I ran out of memory cards(!!) so I bought the above card for 6.90 euros at a large Carrefour supermarket. Normally the card works okay but sometimes it refuses to record a photo and comes up with the message "Write error. This photograph cannot be displayed." I normally turn the camera off remove the card, reinsert it, and it works fine.
The card came with a 5 year warranty, so I wrote to SanDisk and their response is either take it back to where you bought it or send it by post at your expense to the Czech Republic!!
See below for the full e-mail correspondence. In these circumstances is the warranty worthless?

Dear Ian,

Thanks for contacting SanDisk Technical Support. It is our goal to make sure you have all the resources you need to get the most from your product.

Thank you for the information provided.

If format did not resolve the issue, unfortunately, it seems that the card is defective and needs to be replaced.

As we mentioned in our previous email SanDisk does not refund for defective items and a refund would be possible only at place of purchase.

If you wish to replace the card with SanDisk please provide the following information

- Phone number
- Complete address (no P.O Box please)

SanDisk stands by its warranty and we are glad to help you with your warranty replacement as soon as we have established that your device is qualified for replacement.

Should a replacement be required we recommend that you take your device back to your place of purchase as this is the quickest way to get your warranty replacement.

If you would like SanDisk to process the warranty replacement please follow these steps:
Please send your old SanDisk device back to our depot in the Czech Republic via trackable mail service. Please note that SanDisk is not responsible for the cost of mailing the device to us.
All other information, including the address of our depot, will be provided to you via email and can also be found in following link:
Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) process for Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) customers.
You will receive your brand new replacement product (which might not be in retail packaging) by courier at no cost to you within 7-10 business days of receipt of your original device at our depot.

We shall be waiting for your update. Thank you for your kind cooperation.

Dear Ian,

Thanks for contacting SanDisk Technical Support. It is our goal to make sure you have all the resources you need to get the most from your product.

I understand that your 8GB SD memory card appears write protected.
Please let us know, have you attempted to format the card using a computer? If yes, what was the exact error message you received when format failed?

In order to eliminate the issue you are having, please visit the following article from our online Knowledge base and let us know if the issue is now resolved. As format will erase all data from your card please make sure that you have everything backed up prior to proceeding.
Memory card is write protected or locked

In case you own a Mac, please follow instructions below:

Please allow us to inform you that SanDisk does not refund for defective items, but it only replaces them with the exact same product. A refund could be an option though at place of purchase.

Should we determine that the card needs to be replaced, we require the following information so that we can verify the authenticity of your memory card and register it for warranty purposes:

- Serial number (take note of all the numbers that you can find on the card)
- Color of your card
- Information printed on the front of the card
- Place of purchase
- Do you see the letter "R" or the word "Refurb/Refurbished" at the back of the card?
- How was the product packaged at the time of purchase?
- Physical damage (Yes/No)

- Phone number
- Complete address (no P.O Box please)

I'd say that for that money it's not worth the hassle. Just bin it and buy a new one from Amazon for a tenner!
