Well done from me too
Hello there. A well done from me too to the other sections. I also was very busy in November and forgot to vote. Heh I reckon I only won the early stages section cos there were so few entries, so guaranteed a podium position. Was still surprised to be on the top step. I didn't stand a chance on the ...

Speckled Wood 30th October
On 30th October I saw 1 Speckled Wood at Grove Farm in Greenford, Middlesex. I saw 3 Speckled Woods and 1 Red Admiral in the same location a week earlier. No other butterfly sightings for me. Horsenden Hill produced a big fat zero for me in October. (I was in Scotland the first 2 weeks mind you... S...

Reminds me of 2 or 3 summers ago when during a lunchbreak I was walking along the Thames at Brentford and found a fancy looking and quite big white Swallowtail type butterfly. It was feeding but would not stop moving. Didn't get any pics. In this case almost 100% sure it was an escapee from the Lond...

Indeed on Saturday Jack and I both had success photographing very fresh Male and Female Brimstones as they fed at both Aston Rowant (on Bald Hill) and at Oakley Wood, Oxfordshire. Oakley Wood was impressive with 10+ visible at times along the verges of the track. I forget the name of the flowers the...

I decided to change mine. This image combines no less than 4 of my hobbies! Gliding, biking, photography and of course butterflying. http://upload2.postimage.org/239264/ukbutterflies200808Entry.jpg On the 10th I took the inset picture of a Brown Hairstreak at Hell Coppice near Oakley Wood, Bucks. Ca...

Yeah it's almost tempting to dump my plans for tomorrow and head to Ivinghoe Beacon in the Chilterns to see if they have come out there too. (As well as the new Dingy Skipper Brood I heard about too.) Nice pics. Well done for finding the BH. Jack and I were unsuccessful with that species at Oakley W...

I was at the Chequered Skipper too that day, on 17th June. That was the day we saw the Black Hairstreak in nearby Glapthorne Cow Pasture. http://piccies.flybywire.org.uk/General/2007/20070617/ChequeredSkipperPub1.jpg http://piccies.flybywire.org.uk/General/2007/20070617/ChequeredSkipperPub2.jpg http...

Aston Rowant and Oakley Wood 4th August 2007
I joined Jack Harrison today in Oxfordshire looking for Silver Spotted Skippers and Brown Hairstreaks. First stop Aston Rowant around 10pm. Started off cloudy, but despite that we soon found out first SSSkipper. As the sun came out it started to bask too before eventually warming up enough to fly of...

Yeah as I am 15 min's away by foot from office to summit I kept an ewye on the hill this week. Today I watched a Purple Hairstreak on the ground appearing to lay eggs on grass stems! I saw a similar thing at nearby Grove Farm yesterday. No mistake about the ID though. Yeah no shortage of Small Coppe...

I saw them at approx SU972653. Car park was the one by the roundabout to the west-southwest of there. Looking at getamap the hill is called Oystershell Hill, and I saw the majority of them on the northwest slope. I followed the path Eastwards from the carpark, up the hill and then left and down the ...

I took this shot last weekend:

See how many you can spot! (I counted 29 in the pic). Of course there were many more outside the frame. Biggest concentration I have ever seen.

Graylings at Chobham Common, Surrey
I stopped at Chobham Common on the way home in the afternoon. Saw my first ever Graylings. Thanks for the tip-off Jack! The changing weather (frequent cloudshadow) meant they settled down more easily and were not too hard to photograph. (In the sunshine they were indeed hard to get near once they st...

OK I decided to change mine. I originally had a Purple Hairstreak then was tempted to replace it with a good Grayling closeup. However in the end I think this Brown Argus pic is better quality: http://piccies.flybywire.org.uk/ButterfliesMoths/2007/20070730/BrownArgusOpen.jpg Taken at Horsenden Hill ...

My garden is in the NW London suburbs. So not many. We do get passing Whites and occasional Red Admirals though - especially when the ivy flowers in the autumn. Seen Speckled Woods, Commas and Holly Blues too. Plus Gatekeepers basking on the Ivy on the trellis. The most interesting one this year was...

Yeah I noticed the lack of Chalkhill Blues. In the end I did see and photograph a single Male near the bottom of the Eastern slope, but that was it. I've heard reports of Chalkhills elsewhere. Could it be it is a touch too early at Sharpenhoe? (I did note the lack of Chalkhills in my main post in th...

Barnhill
My local is Barnhill, overlooking Wembley Stadium. The hill is crowned by woodland, with a nice pond in a clearing at the summit. Surrounding the wood are some decent meadows. From the summit there is a great view down to Wembley Stadium, right down Olympic Way to the front entrance. I have seen the...
