Monarch on IoW

Post by Robin Pearson »

While on holiday on the Isle of Wight I spotted and my friend photographed, one, or maybe two Monarchs at the Ventnor Botanic Gardens on the 7th August. They are slow-flying and settle easily so a nice easy subject to snap!

I'll attach the photo when I get it.

It should be noted however there is a 'Butterfly World' about 10 miles up the road... :P

Reminds me of 2 or 3 summers ago when during a lunchbreak I was walking along the Thames at Brentford and found a fancy looking and quite big white Swallowtail type butterfly. It was feeding but would not stop moving. Didn't get any pics. In this case almost 100% sure it was an escapee from the London Butterfly House a few miles to the west.

OK, here is the pic my friend took, looks a little worn after its trip across the (ahem) Atlantic don't you think?

I've heard there is a small colony on the Canary Islands.
