Re: Collard Hill or Daneway Banks?
I visited Daneway Banks last Sunday and saw a good number of large blues, the best place to see them is in the field where the ponies are but they can be seen throughout the reserve. The advantage of visiting Daneway is that there are far less visitors there than there are at Collard. I should imagi...

Re: Forest Of Dean
As far as I know pearl bordered fritillaries are not found in the Forest of Dean, the only place they can be seen in Gloucestershire is in Hailey Wood near Cirencester. They can be found in Haugh Wood between Ross-on-Wye and Hereford, it would be possible to visit this location if you are staying in...
Re: May 2014
Saturday May 3rd, visited Prestbury Hill in the afternoon and saw a small number of duke of burgundys all looking very fresh, about six to eight sighted. These were all seen at the bottom of the Bill Smylie field in the stoney, quarried areas close to the gate by the wood that divides the two fields...

Re: 2012 - winners and losers....
In Gloucestershire this year the winners were ringlets, meadown browns, and marbled whites all seen in good numbers at Prestbury Hill and Rodborough Common, small heaths, seen in good numbers in the spring. Chalkhill blues did really well on most of the local sites (Swelshill Bank, Crickley Hill, Pr...

Re: 2nd Camera
I have the Canon Ixus 107 which i'd highly recommend. It is very small and would easily fit in a pocket. It takes very good macros and I've taken many good pictures of butterflies with it since I bought it just over a year ago
Re: May 2012
I had the chance to make the most of the good weather today so visited Prestbury Hill near Cheltenham. I saw a good number of duke of burgundys, dingey skippers and small blues, most of which were in excellent condition. I also saw two green hairstreaks on the edge of the woodland which divides the ...

Pearl Bordered Fritillaries, Cirencester Park, Glos
I'm hoping to see the pearl bordered fritillaries for the first time at Cirencester Park in Gloucestershire sometime during the week commencing 21st May weather permitting. Is this species still likely to be on the wing then, and if so where are the best places in the park to see them, as it is a va...

Re: Crickley Hill And Barrow Wake
A good number of species can be seen at this side, it is good for wall browns and most of the common grassland species. If you go to the visitor centre at Crickley Hill, close to the car park and toilets there is a large information board inside listing all the species that have been recorded there ...

Re: Adonis Blues at Rodborough Common, Stroud
Many thanks to you both for the information and for replying so quickly, it looks like Swelshill Bank will be the best place then, I've been there before to see the chalkhill blues. The weather looks set fair early next week so I hope to make it there on either Tuesday or Wednesday

Adonis Blues at Rodborough Common, Stroud
Afternoon all, I'm hoping to visit Rodborough and Bownham Common near Stroud, Glos early next week to see Adonis blues. Does anyone on here know the best areas to find them as Rodborough Common is a large area. Any information would be much appreciated, many thanks, Ed

Re: Lightweight field cameras
I can highly recommend the Canon Ixus107, it is very good for macrowork and is light and easy to transport as it fits in a pocket. I've taken lots of photographs of butterflies, damselflies, bees and flowers since I bought it in April this year. The Ixus is reasonably priced too

Re: Small Blue
Small blue can be found at Prestbury Hill Nature Reserve near Cheltenham, close to Cleeve Hill the highest point in the Cotswolds. I don't know if there are any 2nd generation ones around at the moment though. I think there is a contact number for the site on Butterfly Conservation website, it may b...
