210mm vs 300mm lens

Hi I'm using the Sony Alpha system and I am looking at telephoto lenses for photographing butterflies - my camera has an APS-C size sensor so there is cropping. The 210mm has a minimum focusing distance of 110cm while the 300mm is 150cm. I realise that the 300mm will have advantages in other areas b...

But what about that Brimstone left foreground casting the shadow on the white? It wasn’t mentioned in the previous posts.

Small or Green-veined white?

I have to admit to finding it difficult to differentiate between these two. In my defence both species seem to vary a lot! Here is the photograph - just to the left of the white can be seen a Brimstone moving in to attack :D

I would recommend Richard Lewington's Pocket Guide to the Butterflies of Britain and Ireland.

Strategy for a meadow

I am lucky enough to have a meadow next to my house. For some years I have rented it out to sheep who eat everything except nettles and thistles and attracted a lot of flies. It also has some tress in it - ash, birch, willow, apple trees. This year no sheep and I have mowed selectively to allow area...

This book is now getting hard to find. I hope it's allowed to post here that play.com are currently selling the paperback for £9.99.

Re: Large Heath

Back to Fenn's and Whixall Moss today. Very few Large Heaths in evidence - and those that were looked more like the form polydama rather than the davus that was so in evidence earlier in the summer. Has anyone had experience of this site and can comment on whether different forms exist here? (I noti...

Re: Frohawk books

Thanks for the reply. In "The Complete Book of British Butterflies" do the colour plates cover all the species seen In Britain?

Frohawk books

Hi does anyone know books that contain Frohawk colour illustrations. I have seen online for sale Butterflies and Moths of the British Isles (Junior field guides no.3) which is cheap and The Complete Book of British Butterflies which is more expensive (50 odd pounds). I would not want to get either o...

Re: Large Heath

Went for a walk on Fenn's Moss on 26th June. Very hot day and there were dozens of Large Heath.
