Re: May 2012

Moth trapping overnight in a bog, so had the chance to look around this morning before leaving, saw 40+ small heath, 2 speckled wood, a common heath and 3 timothy tortrix just by a quick search of open bog. Not bad for 10 minutes. Small heath were not very photograph friendly though. Anyone else fin...

Re: Orange-Tip variation in hibernica supspecies?

No idea about it being an ab, Dave, but he does look weird with one wing tip in the sun and one in the shade - A Yellow and Orange Tip! Best wishes, Lee haha yeah. In some light I have noticed the males have yellow-orange tips and other times orange tips. I think the hibernica subspecies males are ...

Re: Two wild plants ID help

Hi,i would go for Corn Chanomile for the first 3 pics, and Cornflower for the other two. Both are annual, but will self-seed for future years if your soil is not too heavy-simply rake over the soil in March to stimulate germination. The corn chamomile looks good. Some of the seeds were from a wildflo...

Re: Two wild plants ID help

The first one looks rather like one of the chamomiles or mayweeds. Does it smell? If so, is it fragrant (like chamomile) or foetid? Guy I was thinking that, didn't really notice much of a smell. Could it be corn chamomile (Anthemis arvensis)? Having a second look at the other plant, seems to have a...

Two wild plants ID help

I planted lots of different wild plant seeds in September last year and they have grown well. I am unsure what two of them are and don't quite remember what I planted. Can anyone help ID these? This is started to grow tallish, at first I thought it was tansy but the flower makes me think something e...

Sad and wrong how this is happening, I signed, this sort of thing should have stopped, proves if you make big money from something, nothing else seems to matter.

Orange-Tip variation in hibernica supspecies?

This is the subspecies hibernica (found at Oxford Island, Lough Neagh, NI) and I noticed the spots are smaller than on a typical OT I have seen, could it be an aberration? I am unsure about aberrations in subspecies like this. Here is the image: oragetip.jpg This is a typical male I usually find, ex...

Bird ID

I was at a coastal site today in south down, NI and saw this bird, I was watching it when a big rat ran past, wasn't very nice but can anyone tell me what it is? Could it be a female stonechat? Went to look for butterflies here but didn't get to see any until leaving when the sun came out (was very ...

Re: A field trip to see Orange-Tip butterflies

Thanks both, excuse not replying sooner Iain, The next one I'll be doing better, had a lot of time working with voice narration and recording and video editing and watched a lot of nature documentaries and saw how other professionals edited videos, so can make the next one better. I am doing the Bio...

Re: April 2012

I finally found 2 orange-tips yesterday (both males) at a National Trust wetland nature reserve, but they would not sit still long enough for a shot, oh well, least I saw them, also heard my first grasshopper warbler there although I didn't see it fully.

Re: Moths of Europe Volume 3

So the last will be Noctuidae then? That is the one I have been waiting for since you often find more noctuids than other types of moth and it would be interesting to see the variation in the noctuidae like they showed in the other species in the first two volumes. Have first two volumes, so going t...

Re: Field Guide to the Micro Moths of Great Britain & Irelan

I am going for the hardback one, should last longer as my macro book is a bit roughed up now. Apparently there is around 600 or so species not in the book, but there may be another book in future that will show those with information on dissection so you can ID the harder to ID ones.

A field trip to see Orange-Tip butterflies

On the 15th April, I went on a field trip to see if I could find any Orange-Tip butterflies, and decided to record the whole thing and make a video of it. Here it is: I think the only problem I had when searc...

Re: Sensor cleaning

Thanks all, ordered some sensor cleaning pads, I tried a lot to use an air blower but it didn't work to clean some of the small dust but most it worked well. Mike, thanks for the tutorial, will be useful.

Sensor cleaning

I know this has probably been mentioned in the past, but last week I got my sensor cleaned on my Canon 600D because it had a lot of dust and dirt on it from when I was out at an island off shore at Strangford lough. It was fine until today when I noticed small amounts of dirt on the sensor. I only h...
