Brown Hairstreak Ova

They say the proof of the pudding etc... As Pete was writing his last report I was out at a very wet and windy Noar Hill searching for my first Brown Haistreak Ova. Can you imagine my delight when I actually counted four. Definitely exciting and a good way to walk off the excesses of the festive sea...

Enhancements

I think the changes made to the website are indeed very professional and it never ceases to amaze me how Pete manages to improve on what to me is perfection.
Great work Pete, I await to see what brainwave you come up with next.

Well Oy I will settle for Wall Butterfly and I would have settled to get that close to one this year, alas they have been too elusive for me.

Moth Traps

As I explained to Wayne at the above forum I went to a Mothing Evening a week ago which was monitored by Hants and IOW Butterfly Conservation Moth Officer Tim Norris. Firstly he is as near to a proffesional as one can get and he is not the only one in Hampshire doing this. A week later I had a repor...

Drinker Moth

Another good shot Wayne. Went to a moth evening about a week ago and saw 127 different species of moths and of course amongst these was my first sighting of the actual moth. Strange looking but fascinating moth. Glad to have been of help Wayne Like your Dark Green photo as well. What a great butterf...

The Drinker Moth

Sure thing Wayne is the larva of "The Driker" moth larva which I usually find on the grasses or reeds to the side of a ride walking through a forest. Apparently it gets it name from the habit of the larva which is attacted to the early morning dew. You can find it on the UK Moths website @...

Small Skipper

Would tend to agree, its a Small Skipper. The Outer margin on the forewing (LH side of photo)tends to be black and not diffused which says its not an Essex Skipper also the antenna is not as dipped in black paint which backs this up. The sex band also on the forewing can just be seen as thin and not...

Caterpillar

Hi Luckcactus, have to say I'm somewhat waning on this teaser but have done a little more research. Looking at things back to front I found that the only moth that eats Laylandii is "Blair's Shoulder Knot",a strange name for a moth with strange eating habits. You can find it at:- http://ukm...

White Moth !!!

Hi Clovista, from your description I rather think the moth you are describing could well be the pretty moth called a White Ermine (Spilosoma lubriciped(Linnaeus, 1758).
You can check it out on the UK Moths website at http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?id=3228

Hope this info does the trick.

It is almost a certain that what you have seen flying is the Cinnabar Moth.
A beautiful moth but with a very poor flight pattern.

Hope this helps

Caterpillar ID

Somewhat sticking my toes in the water and having breezed through Jim Porter's "Caterpillars of the British Isles" I would have to say the caterpillar looks very much like a moth called "The Stranger"(Laconobia blenna). Should this be the case and again referring back to the book...
