SW France and N Spain, help please
Hello again, Just back from a super trip to the Pyrenees and then Asturias in Northern Spain. I've catalogued all my bird pictures but, as usual, I have some butterflies which I can't pin down (not literally!). Any help will be gratefully received. Nos 1 to 4 were in the French Pyrenees and No 4 was...

Re: Four from Spain
Thanks, Guy, that was quick! I had seen the Festoon in the Crossbill guide to Extremadura and was looking out for it because it looked so beautiful - and when I found one I didn't recognise it!
Thanks again,
David

Four from Spain
Hello again,
Just back from a birding trip, which was excellent, to Extremadura, Central Spain. While out I saw quite a few butterflies but would appreciate help in identifying these four. As always, thanks in advance for your expertise and ready help.
Best wishes,
David

Southern France in May
Hello again,
I was in the Grands Causses NP recently and found this tiny butterfly with such an eye-catching colour scheme. Can anyone put a name to it for me please?
Thanks in advance,
David

Re: Cevennes (France) butterflies
Hi David, No Citril Finch but we had Firecrests and Crested Tits dripping out of some of the pines. We were staying near Nant and the site suggested in the Crossbill guide seemed to be two and a half hours away which is a whole day on a far from certainty. In the spring it will be a priority. I don'...

Re: Cevennes (France) butterflies
Many thanks for all your help. Going back to the grayling it was photographed through a wire fence unfortunately and this can be seen clipping the right wing tip. If, indeed, the picture is "rare" I'd be happy to offer it for any non-commercial use as a way of repaying the help I've always...

Re: Cevennes (France) butterflies
Roger, many thanks for all the help. I seem to come here after holidays and the helpful attitude is a real credit to this forum. I'm really a bird person and can remember the early days and the difficulty of separating Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff if they wouldn't sing - I'm still at that stage wit...

Re: Cevennes (France) butterflies
Thank you both for the help. It's a beautiful place and we're already booking to return next May when the flowers and birds will be superb. I seem to have some way to go before putting head above parapet again! More questions, if I may? 9.jpg A wildlife guide who was leading the party was offering I...

Cevennes (France) butterflies
Hello, Just back from the Cevennes NP in southern France and have some images which I'd be grateful if anyone could help with identification. I have had a go at some so I'll stick my head above the parapet with a beginner's attempt at ID - if I'm wrong please tell me why. 1. Great Banded Grayling. 2...

Re: Cuban fliers
Thanks to all for the quick responses. Mark, if I had to name this one I might have chosen this name! Guy, thanks for yours too, I did Google them and thought you were spot on (it just knowing where to start isn't it?) and I was about to catalogue No 1 as Ruddy Daggerwing when along comes Colin... C...

Cuban fliers
It's that bird photographer again! A recent trip to Cuba brought some lovely bird pictures (at dragnil.co.uk) and some butterflies and dragonflies. I wonder if I might ask for more help with identifying the attached pictures? I'm grateful for help given in the past and hope that I'm not killing gold...

Re: Butterflies of Goa
Many thanks to all who have helped me. The butterflies in Goa were more numerous and exciting than the birds in many ways, it was a wonderful experience. There were also huge numbers of dragonflies, do you know of any similar sites to this that might help with identifying them? I've Googled it but h...

Re: Butterflies of Goa
Fantastic, thank you so much. This forum is always so helpful and now I'm going to push my luck if I may - but it will clear my desk as it were. The first is another Goan that I missed and the other 2 were taken in the French Pyrenees last September. I'm thinking one is a fritillary but not Queen of...

Butterflies of Goa
I'm just back from a fortnight photographing the birds (when they are showing) and butterflies (when the birds are hiding) in Goa. I've managed to identify most of the butterflies I met using "A Photographic Guide to Butterflies of Goa" but a few have me stumped. If anyone can identify the...

One from The Gambia
Just back from The Gambia and an amazing experience. There were, literally, hundreds of thousands of these butterflies around for a few days. I was surprised that they were also nocturnal and clustered around any lights they could find. A local man said they were migrants but could not name them. Ca...
