One from The Gambia

Post by dragnil »

Just back from The Gambia and an amazing experience. There were, literally, hundreds of thousands of these butterflies around for a few days. I was surprised that they were also nocturnal and clustered around any lights they could find. A local man said they were migrants but could not name them. Can anyone here help please? Thanks in advance, David

Hi David,

This looks very much like a Brown-veined White (Belenois aurota) which occurs in Gambia and a lot of other places as well because it is strongly migratory. It is also known as The Pioneer and African Caper White.

Thanks, Vince,

A search on Belenois aurota brings up many similar pictures - it's just knowing what to put in Google...
