I went on a Fritillary Hunt in Kent today: First stop High Elms, Cuckoo Wood, in the meadow underneath the pylons where I saw four Silver washed Fritillaries IMG_0596.JPG Then to near-by Lullingstone Country Park on the golf course where there were about 15-20 Dark green Fritillaries IMG_0657.JPG IM...
Re: July 2012
I went to Warehorn to resume my White letter Hairstreak vigil and had the pleasure of bumping into Dave Brown and family who were likewise engaged. We managed to see one WLH and about five Purple Hairstreaks.I then went back to Orlestone to see the White Admirals. I saw about ten in all IMG_0518.JPG...

And a CommaRe: July 2012
Since last week I've been on three Stake-Outs at the Warehorn Elms and today was rewarded with a sighting ( albeit brief! ) of one White-Letter Hairstreak as he quickly disappeared on the other side of the tree. I then went back to Orlestone Forest : a much better day for White Admirals ( I saw 15 )...
Re: July 2012
The Marbled Whites on my local patch emerged on 23rd June last year in considerable numbers. I saw my first this year on 27th June, just the one, and by today the population had doubled..It was very blustery today and I couldn't get near to either of them but here are a couple of pictures to liven u...

Re: Skipper ID
Thanks to all those who helped me out on this: I hadn't realised the importance of the male sex brand. I'll keep a look out for it in future.

Re: June 2012
I went to Orlestone Forest this morning in the hope of finding a White Admiral. They were out by 7th June at this site last year and so I've been visiting regularly since the start of this month. Today I quickly came across several Meadow Browns, two Speckled Woods, three Brimstones and a Large Skipp...
Re: June 2012
I saw five Swallowtails at Strumpshaw Fen today
And at Westleton Common, three Silver studded BluesRe: June 2012
Regarding Wrecclesham, my map reading skills are not the best but when I visited the site yesterday I used ( or at least thought I was using - my hip replacement forbids vaulting fences and leaping ditches ) a public footpath which runs parallel to the railway line close by the sand pit. I used OS L...
Re: June 2012
Today I had an early finish at work and inspired by other UKBers as well as the sunshine,I drove to Wrecclesham in search of Glanville Fritillaries. As soon as I arrived a huge black cloud settled overhead, blotting out the sun. I am hopeless at finding roosting butterflies and for what seemed like a...
Re: June 2012
It was rather dark but I don't know if that is normal,I'm afraid David. Thanks for the information regarding the pattern: I didn't know if it was natural variation or a difference between the sexes.
Re: June 2012

Lydlinch Common and Hod Hill
Hi guys,I'm planning a visit to Dorset this coming Saturday with Marsh Fritillary as my target. David Newland in his "Discover Butterflies in Britain" recommends Lydlinch Common which he says has probably the largest population in England: has anyone seen them there this year? Alternativel...
