Totternhoe Quarry

I'm going to be staying near Totternhoe at the end of May, which seems like a good opportunity to look for Small Blues at Totternhoe Quarry, Beds. Last time I went there I only managed to find one, but I suspect I was looking in the wrong place. Can anyone give me directions as to where on the site ...

Re: dilettante

Thanks chaps. Hairstreaks are infuriating to photograph I find as they constantly rotate when feeding, and always seem to be angled the wrong way or out of reach when resting!

18th April 2015 It felt like the butterfly year started properly today, with a visit to Fleam Dyke, Cambs. I had a few target species for the day and ticked them all off eventually! There were a lot of Peacocks, Small Tortoiseshells and Brimstones around. Apart from a few unidentified whites I didn...

The first one's certainly a male reed bunting. I'm lucky enough to have lots of them visit my garden feeder.

A pair from Cambridgeshire in June, where there was a large emergence along a farm track near my house. I watched this courting couple for a while:

Re: Site amendments

I'd like to think you can add DGF to Therfield Heath TL341397 Good numbers there in 2014, and also seen there in 2013. Another good site to include would be Gamlingay Wood (TL241537) and the adjacent Sugley Wood (TL244538). SWF in good numbers at the former, plus Speckled Wood, Comma, Ringlet, GVW. ...

If you go at the right time in the right weather, Fermyn Woods is pretty much a dead cert for seeing PE in numbers.

Re: Selfie Stick

Assuming you mean to take pictures of butterflies, I rather doubt it. If you're using a phone (which you'd have to be for the remote button to work), then by the time it's on the end of a stick and pointing at your butterfly the screen probably wouldn't be pointing the right direction for you to fra...

Re: PhilBWright

I think with this image, an optical zoom X50 was used plus a digital zoom X4 making the image 200x and just over 3 Mega Pixels (12.1 divided by 4, correct me if I am wrong). Hi Phil, I would imagine that 4x zoom means 4x magnification of length (width and height) not area, so in fact it's 12.1 divi...

Re: Summer 2014 Competition

Unhealthy competition spoils much in life, for example football! :) Yes, why can't the teams just agree to share the ball :-) Great photos in the gallery, and worthy winners. I'm glad it wasn't me doing the judging. One thing I've never understood with UKB competitions is why the winning photos are...

Beautiful picture, kevling. Makes me wish I'd made more of an effort to see these when I was down that way in August.

Re: Sensor Problems.

Basic sensor cleaning is really easy. If it really is sticky pollen grains you may need to do (or pay for) a full wet sensor clean, but usually a good blow with a rocket blower ( some examples from amazon ) will do the job. Camera manuals are always full of dire warnings about damaging the sensor, b...

A few from Savoie and Var for ID please

I posted these in my diary recently, but would welcome some identification help please: The first set are from Haute Savoie region, first week of August: I wasn't sure what this one is - the closest I could find in my book was Titania's or PBF? http://www.pbase.com/dilettante/image/157071730/origina...
