Re: Moth nights 2011

if memory serves doesn't the black arches have pink on it's abdomen? Hang on I'll have to look that one up Chris ... Still none the wiser, the hindwings and abdomen look to have a fawn colouration (darker at the hindwing margin) but that is in photo pictures of pinned examples :? . Fresh ones might...

Re: Which butterflies are you most looking forward to seeing

Brimstone — signalling that winter hasn't got much longer to go — in six or seven weeks time. I agree Jack. Brimstones always raise the spirits for the coming season. Lying amongst the knapweed flowers of Martin Down, listening to the skylarks, yellowhammers and linnets and watching the Dark Green ...

Re: Moth nights 2011

Thanks for the great response response guys and gals. I saw no fewer than 8 moths whilst driving along a short local B road (only about a mile long) near Cambridge on my way home this evening. I'm sure I've never seen so many moths on the wing in December. Damp evenings have been pretty rare here ov...

Moth nights 2011

2011 has been a fantastic butterfly year for me with 44 different UK species of butterflies sighted including three for the first time and visits to four new sites :D . Having access to the UK Butterfly website with its forum contributions by knowledgeable members has helped to coordinate everything...

Re: Holiday to Tenerife part 1

Sorry to be a bit late, but your Wasp spider is Argiope trifasciata not bruennichi. It is widely distributed in the tropics and sub-tropics including the southernmost parts of the Iberian peninsula. Thanks Mikhail and apologies for not researching it better  . I remember going to Southern Spa...

Re: Winter jolly

Thanks for organising the Jolly Susie. Im so glad that I came :) but it all seemed to go so quick :? Finally made it back into Epsom via Clapham Junction 2hrs 40mins after leaving the pub. Would've been home a lot earlier but the local taxis don't start until after 8pm (we'd left ourselves insuffici...

Re: multiple species photo challenge

That forewing visible in the lower right corner looks distinctly Hipparchia semele. I agree that looks like a grayling. For the others my initial thought was large Wall brown, then Great Sooty Satyr and then Tree Grayling :? Don't know, just guessing really  Put me out of my misery Guy

Re: multiple species photo challenge

I've only got a couple of "multiple species photos" so I'm going to cheat and add in a "multiple forms" photo (good luck finding them both) with my pair of multiple species! Marbled Whites and Meadow Brown ..... Chalkhill Blue and Adonis blue ....... Silver washed Fritillary and...

Re: multiple species photo challenge

OK - a butterfly house shot with four individuals (the one down near West Wittering in Sussex). Green one is a Malachite (Siproeta stelenes) Orange banded one is Shoemaker (I think don't remember latin name) and outer one is Common Eggfly or Diadem (Hypolimnas bolina?), The middle one I've no idea....

Re: multiple species photo challenge

Is it cheating to stick in a photo from a flowery track in the Pyrenees? Initially I was going to say UK species only and no Butterfly house photo's, but then I thought, why put limitations, lets see what comes back. Fantastic shot by the way Guy :o :) I had trouble seeing the hairstreak .. but he'...

multiple species photo challenge

Chasing butterflies and getting that elusive shot has always been a big part of the fun and challenge of this hobby. Incidentally I think most UKB members are keen to record and inform on the number of species they see in a season or on any particular day. However, what I would like to know is wheth...

Re: Help needed with mystery butterfly

The eyespots would be a fair bit smaller, but that has the look of male Large Copper. I have to agree with Matzukaze although I'm completely baffeled on this one :? . Although a butterfly image is depicted the eyespots look typical saturnind moth to me. The insect was observed from close quarters t...

birds noted at Tenerife

Seems a bit pointless now but here are some low res pictures I took of birds whilst on Tenerife. Intially I was going to ask for the I.D of a couple, but since then I've managed to work out what they are (I think). Re: Susie

Your own private tropical butterfly house eh Susie? Good for you. It makes a change from keeping land snails, cockroaches, scorpions or tarantulas. In fact it's no different from keeping any other insect or invertebrate in captivity or as a pet. Fingers crossed you achieve a pairing. Piers. Totally...

Re: Holiday to Tenerife part 3

A great trip report Phil - just a pity that it's over...any chance of you getting away again soon? I found plenty of Canary blues they were well nigh impossible to photograph. Incessantly on the move in the heat of the day they almost completely eluded me and my 35mm SLR (it was before I went digit...
