Swallow Tailed Moths?

Post by Angie »

My first post to include images - I hope I got it right!

Have I correctly identified as a pair of Swallow Tailed Moths in the garden this afternoon. Thanks in advance :D

Hi Angie,

Yes, they are Swallow-tailed. A common moth but very striking and they do breed in gardens. I would guess the fat-bodied one is the female and the one lower down is an exhausted or sleeping male.

Thanks for confirming for me. First time I've noticed them - I actually thought it was a dying leaf on the shrub at first. Poor chap - they were not there today so I hope Mr Swallowtail is off enjoying himself after an afternoon's nap :D
Having looked up what they look like at the caterpillar stage, they'd be very easily missed to someone like me.
