To my uneducated mind I thought 'Moth' upon spotting this somewhat dumpy looking character.
I then wondered; might this be either a Small Skipper or an Essex Skipper? But on looking it up it seems it is too early to be one of those so I'm back to a Moth.
I have attached a couple of pictures.

That's a Large Skipper Mike As you say it's early for Smessex Skippers and you can make out the darker margins and spotting near the edges of the wings.

Dear Wurzel (I have never addressed a Wurzel before!).
Wow. If this is a Large Skipper the immediate assumption is that the Small Skipper must be, for want of a better word, Small!
However it looks as if the Large Skipper is not actually that much larger.
It seems this would be quite early?
