A Moth ~ I think ….

Post by Mike Robinson »

To my uneducated mind I thought 'Moth' upon spotting this somewhat dumpy looking character.

I then wondered; might this be either a Small Skipper or an Essex Skipper? But on looking it up it seems it is too early to be one of those so I'm back to a Moth.

I have attached a couple of pictures.

I would be grateful for some guidance please. A million thanks in advance ~ Mike …..

That's a Large Skipper Mike :D As you say it's early for Smessex Skippers and you can make out the darker margins and spotting near the edges of the wings.

Have a goodun

Dear Wurzel (I have never addressed a Wurzel before!).

Wow. If this is a Large Skipper the immediate assumption is that the Small Skipper must be, for want of a better word, Small!

However it looks as if the Large Skipper is not actually that much larger.

It seems this would be quite early?

I greatly appreciate the kind and speedy reply.

Many thanks ~ Mike …..
