identify moth seen in France 2011

Post by anno »

Walking the coast path, amogst head -high shrubs and vegetation, I caught sight of orange butterfly (?), which was strikingly striped in black and white or cream when it came to rest. It moved along the path, resting a few times but I didn't get a good look at its wings in flight. I have attached a (not very good)photo of the moth/butterfly at rest.
This was near St Gildas de Rhuys, Sarzeau, Brittany, France.

Hi Anno,
It is a Jersey Tiger moth - very attractive aren't they. Some have bright red underwings, whilst others (like yours) have orange instead.

Its a Jersey Tiger (Euplagia quadripunctaria).

See http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?bf=2067 for more information.

Kind regards. Mark

Thank you very much. It was new to me, so exciting. Also, looking at the pictures it was probably nearer the red than orange - quite vivid.

I love this website and will now look out for more butterflies and moths.
