Walking the coast path, amogst head -high shrubs and vegetation, I caught sight of orange butterfly (?), which was strikingly striped in black and white or cream when it came to rest. It moved along the path, resting a few times but I didn't get a good look at its wings in flight. I have attached a (not very good)photo of the moth/butterfly at rest.
This was near St Gildas de Rhuys, Sarzeau, Brittany, France.

Hi Anno,
It is a Jersey Tiger moth - very attractive aren't they. Some have bright red underwings, whilst others (like yours) have orange instead.

Its a Jersey Tiger (Euplagia quadripunctaria).

Thank you very much. It was new to me, so exciting. Also, looking at the pictures it was probably nearer the red than orange - quite vivid.
I love this website and will now look out for more butterflies and moths.
