Fossil Fish on sale in gift shops
A local gift shop (in Torquay) has got a number of fossil fish on sale for prices ranging from £12 up to £250, they all seem to be marked as "Green River, Wyoming, USA". A check on ebay reveals many more from the same location. Question is whether it is right that such items should be on s...

Sony SLT a65
I have been using one of these since January, at that time there was a £699 offer at Jessops. 24 mega pixels and a very useful feature is the "smart teleconverter", actually it crops the sensor to either 12 mp (1.4 ) or 6 mp (2x). I have found this feature coupled with a Tamron 18 to 250 l...

Re: November 2012
I've heard of Speckled Woods surviving into December around here (in 2006 if I remember, which had a very warm autumn), although I'm not sure I've ever seen one beyond late October. In Cornwall I understand they have survived into the first few days of January before "disappearing" for Fe...

Re: November 2012
Latest I have ever seen Speckled Woods is 28th October (both in places not apparently ideal for them), I would suspect that in, suitable sheltered spots that there would be chance of them surviving well into November. Another frequent late survivor is the Small Copper, not seen any locally for a cou...

Some sunshine today at Torquay and in the Royal Terrace Gardens (actually a cliff face facing the sea), 2 Large Whites including one male and a Red Admiral. More sunshine expected tomorrow so I will be looking out for the Large Whites again.

Re: August 2012
I went looking for brown hairstreaks briefly again today. Despite conditions being perfect there wasn't any sign. Have these been seen in Sussex yet? It does seem very late. I did see a holly blue, large white, comma, some gate keepers and meadow browns. Also at home small whites and a red admiral ...

Re: Whitbarrow NNR, Westmorland
Close to Witherslack, where one of the last northern colonies of the silver studded blue was wiped out by a fire in 1942, for a long time I think that this had been thought to be the last colony of sub species Masseyii until a fairly recent evaluation of the population at Prees Heath indicated that ...

Re: Collard Hill
A subtle irony is that I am likely to get my first sighting of a Large Blue before my first sighting of a Small Blue when I have two known (but inaccesible) colonies of the latter within about a mile of where I live. ![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_sad.gif)

I had the same issue on my Sony a65, in the finish it needed the wet wipes to cure the problem.

I visited Cerne Abbas on Monday, there were lots of Marsh Fritillaries along with Adonis Blues, Grizzled Skippers, Dingy Skippers and some very tiny Brown Arguses.
Re: May 2012
Cerne Abbas today lots of Marsh Frits, also Adonis Blues, Dingy and Grizzled Skippers and some of the tiniest Brown Arguses that I have ever seen, until they settled I thought that I was seeing Small Blues. Also met Jenks.

I am hoping to visit Cerne Abbas some time next week. would be grateful to know what butterfly species are likely to be present around the area of the "giant". Cheers.
