My leaf mines video
Here is a video I made about leaf miners from what they are, to how to find them and examples using images taken of leaf mines and videos I have taken myself. Video is in 1080p HD Have a lot of ideas for a lot of more vide...

Canon 600D video brightness issue.
Have an issue with this and wondered if anyone could help me out. I use a Canon 600D for video, its video is quite good and I am overall pleased with it. Only downside I can't seem to get around is that when I use it to shoot video, in slightly darker places than bright daylight (shade, indoors etc....

Re: Detering cats
I have a dog (Australian Shepard cross collie), but not yet fully trained so can't let him out often as he barks at everything going past and would disturb neighbours, but would putting his hair around deter the cat? Smell a dog and not want to come around?
Re: Earwigs
I noticed I was getting a lot in my moth traps this year, when I brought trap indoors after checking it, always found one hidden away I didn't see. Don't think I found as many as you did though.

Re: September 2011
Went out to my local haunt to search for butterflies, all I got was a single large white and GV white. 3 hours of searching over lake, forest, very large area where the flower meadow was and roadside verges with wildflowers. Then again the flower meadow that is maintained for wildlife, was mown (wit...

Re: Moving trees
Thanks John, get better then, I can see it properly now, looks good. When I started planting my trees, neighbour on other side came and saw them and because of what I did, he is thinking of getting me to plant a lot of trees in a field he owns nearby, so more good for wildlife. Decided I may get a l...

Re: Gatekeeper Ab.
Dave,Gatekeepers are spreading-they may be knocking at your door in Co. Down before too long! Nah, I doubt it, they have never moved passed the south end of Ireland, no one knows why, so if they suddenly did move north, that would be something great. Different in England though, they have been spre...

Re: your favourite photo
To be honest, I am not great at butterfly photos and didn't see a lot of butterflies to photograph this year, however I have this one, a common one, small white I found on this flower in a field along with hundreds of others and large/green-veined whites:

Re: Gatekeeper Ab.
Blimey, a new species of Erebia! Nice gatekeeper ab, strange indeed, nice image. Be nice if we had gatekeepers, but they are restricted to the Southern tip of Ireland for some reason.

Re: September 2011
Also, another sign of Autumn ... great big Tegenaria spiders clomping around the house. I swear these things get bigger every year, I had trouble last night getting a glass over one to catch it and put it outside. Yeah I had loads of those in my own house, nicknamed one Speedy Gonzales, really can ...

Re: Detering cats
Never knew about the lion dung thing, not sure if Belfast Zoo would give me some though, only zoo around here. However I have a dog but doesn't seem to deter the cat. Think the only reason the cat comes past is that it catches mice in the field nearby. I like cats a lot and have one myself, but at l...

Detering cats
Last night I dug out a small area in my garden I want to use as a small wildflower patch. This morning I put some compost down and sprinkled wildflower seeds before going out but when I came home just now, I found the neighbours cat had done its business in the area I dug out! Saw it sneaking throug...

Re: Moving trees
Looks great John. Here is what I have at moment (trees here are about 3-4ft tall roughly with two willows and blackthorn being tallest): First two images of the fence where I want to have the trees (not good at distances so can't say how long the fence is but its a little longer than what image show...

Re: Dark green fritillary Scotica form? ID please
Excuse the bad image, but I have one image of scotica, take at a bog in Ireland. Might be a female? Re: Ewyas Harold Wildflower Meadow
I know of a couple of meadows and a few acres of bog land in NI that were grazed by cattle and one by exmoor ponies, only for a few days though. I noticed the bog recovered well, maybe because it wasn't grazed long? One of the meadows had similar happen to it as Ewayas, but there were small patches ...
Re: Insect ID
Some species of harvestman have huge legs (think its some of the jungle species) and they grow so long that they can break them off as they find it hard to walk. BTW, I don't know if this is true or not but I was told years ago that these craneflies, if they could bite, their bite would be poisonous...

Re: Moving trees
John, I didn't think about it that way, but now you mention it, I have talked to Paul Waring before and he mentioned having one of every native tree around the edge of his garden and trims them so he can still chat with his neighbour, like a hedge. Think if I remember right, he said the moths that f...

Re: Planted some common buckthorn!
Reading all this, I am deciding on getting a buckthorn, Brimstones are scarce as hens teeth in NI, due to buckthorn being the same. Ocationally Brimstones are reported as vagrents across from the republic but not that often and not every year so probably be hit and miss but if you don't try, you'll ...
