Re: Unseasonal flora
Goldie, that is defiantly gorse, might be Western Gorse (Ulex gallii) which is a smaller, more compact shrub, with smaller spines than common gorse and usually grows 10 to 50 centimetres tall although some may grow up to 7 ft tall, but can't tell unless there is a closer image of the spines. I have ...

Re: REARING AT HOME
Hi Jack, Welcome :D I agree that rearing is a great way to learn, I once successfully reared over 150 large white butterflies to adult, now that was a sight when I released them, seeing that many take to the air (well 50 emerged first, then the last 100 came a few days later), I remember some caterp...

Re: Gentle Journeys - NHK World - Memories that dance on the
That sounds like a lovely programme. I will look to see if it is being repeated. Not sure, it might be at some point but unsure, if something like this comes up again, I will post in advance, usually check what the programme is going to be about before watching it and on the NHK channel. Remember s...

Gentle Journeys - NHK World - Memories that dance on the win
I watch the NHK World (Japanese channel) on sky often and one program I often watch is "Gentle Journeys" about peoples lives or events in Japan in different places. Last one I saw was "Memories that dance on the wing". This was was about Nagasaka Town, Yamanashi in Japan. Here th...

Re: Impact on butterflies of a mild winter
Im inclined to think that a mild winter is bad news for butterflies. The pests, parasitoids and fungal rots that attack many species fail to be killed off, leading to greater numbers next year. It is thought by many that our damp, mild winters prevent many european species from becoming established. T...

Re: Moth nights 2011
I've limited it to twenty or so, scaled down pictures of 'common' species as I don't want to stretch the generosity of UKB too much (it is a butterfly website after all) Those common species you posted are different by my standards and I have seen around 300+ macros and over 150 micro species in 3 ...

That's a bizarre underside pattern. Looks like some sort of target. There is lots like it, from different species of "88" butterflies that have the 88 marking to other species that have an "89" mark and ones that have marking that looks like "BD", rather unusual, but g...

Re: What is a moth video
Thanks Guy and Mark, the fun part was finding the moths. Glad you liked it. I'll see if I can have the next one done by the end of the week...sufgaring for moths, then have a couple on moth traps, the types of trap and how each of the lights work and if they work for attracting moths (doing actinic ...

What is a moth video
Since the lack of butterflies around and not having much videos of butterflies yet, I made this video "what is a moth" with moth footage and images I have taken from 2007-2011. Had some issues with voice over volume but I think it is ok. [video]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iv1fwJQAWk4[/v...

Re: Crab Apple
What are the benefits oF a wild Crab apple tree over a domestic tree? are the cultivated garden crab apples any good? (I am asking as I have both of the above but not the native crab apple ) I am not to sure, I am growing them because I find native trees important to grow, especially when some like...

Re: The State of the UK's Butterflies 2011
I have noticed here in NI, the small heath is in decline in some areas but in many of the areas its found, its still quite common and there is a project here to try and make sure dingy skippers survive. I am not sure if its been started yet or not, but people were going to make dingy skipper shaped ...

Re: November 2011 competition
I am in full agreement with this change. Over the years I have personally taken less and less interest in the Monthly Competitions. A combination of some very strange voting (some truly magnificent images garnering very low votes, whilst others with little technical or artistic merit have scored st...

Re: Must dos for 2012
Photograph a marsh fritillary (only saw one once and that was a fast flying blur) Surprised at that, Dave. For me, Marsh Fritillaries are one of the more docile and easy to approach butterflies (particularly when compared to other species of Fritillary :x ) Where I saw it, there wasn't any flowers ...

Re: Must dos for 2012
I am currently working on some wildlife videos and one thing I don't have is videos of butterflies (well only a few) so need to get a lot more. I also am missing some species in NI that I would like to find. Next year I want to focus mainly on: 1. Filming butterflies, their habitats and their behavi...

Snowdrops, that is early :o have noticed a lot of wasps myself in my local haunts but didn't think about it. Have not seen a butterfly in 3 months so kinda missing seeing them, only saw 5 moths in two months, so missing seeing any leps. The grey sallow in my garden still has all its leaves (all yell...

Re: Spelling and Typos
If you view these pages with Chrome, as I do, then you do get a spelling (but not grammar) check when you make posts. I just tried with IE8 (which I abandoned long ago because it loaded too slowly) and there was no spelling check. Not surprisingly, Chrome considers IE8 to be a spelling mistake. Guy...

Congrats to the winners some nice images there
although I found CFB's Zygaena fausta image, the contrast seemed a little too dark for my liking, but thats just me.

Re: Colour saturation in Google Chrome
I have noticed that too Bill, noticed it a long time ago (I am a webdesigner so had to go through the differences in various browsers), also noticed a slight difference in Firefox as well compared to Internet Explorer 9 or Chrome. Two different browsers seem to often display webpages slightly differ...
