First 2 are common darters, 3rd is probably another common, last 2 are ruddy darters. Nice shots! :D

I'd say the female darter (No. 1) is a Ruddy too, as the legs are all black & the black marking on the face extends down the side of the frons.

Nothing while specifically butterfly watching, but I have; - had a labrador stick it's nose up my bum, pushing me over onto the adder I was photographing, making me put my hand on another adder I hadn't seen, - crept into a bird hide (didn't want to disturb the kingfishers) to find a middle-aged cha...

'Funny looking' blue

Any ideas on this please? I only got this one massively-cropped shot I'm afraid. I'm supposing it's only something common but it seems 'different' for want of a better word; http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n275/yellowhammer_01/mysteryblueshornecp01.jpg Unfortunately I didn't see the upperside at ...

Small or Essex?

Can anyone help with this one please? Taken in North Kent today, in an area that has both species. My novice opinion is leaning towards Small, but I really don't mind which it is as I've not seen either before! http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n275/yellowhammer_01/smallskippershornecp01.jpg ...

Common blue or Brown argus?

Hi everyone. I've been reading this thread http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1134 with the debate over the species of the blue. I took this photo today & I was happy with an ID of female Common Blue, but now you've got me doubting! Any ideas on what it is, or what to look for...

Thanks guys. This is the first year I've really taken an interest in butterflies (and insects in general) so it's all pretty exciting. No one warned me about all the running around after them though, or about the funny looks you get when sneaking up on bushes!
