Re: Heath or Provencal?
I suppose it has to be, but the hind wing corner is surprising.

Re: Canon 6D
I suppose it is because of the lousy DOF and dynamic range. There are good wide angle lenses now, so that doesn't qualify.MikeOxon wrote:I'm puzzled why 'full frame' has been made to seem so significant.

Re: Red dot sight for cameras
It may work or not. The thing is there is only a limited amount of adjustment available. For your stated purpose it might work - especially if you use tele. If you used it only for short range, you could compensate most of the offset when mounting it. I have to say the idea is rather good. Now where...

Re: Red dot sight for cameras
The offset between the sight and the optical axis could become problematic with the smaller critters and shorter distances. At least you'd have to remember to aim a bit over. I Thought this might be quite nice in a spotting scope, where the offset would be too small to matter due to longer distances...

Re: Macaronesian Lepidoptera list
A new version with some corrections and additions: http://www.jkt.1g.fi/Xtra/LepMacaronesia_(vrs3).xlsx. This one also has list of changes from the original list. However, changes in taxonomy above Genus name are not listed and I may have missed some as I compiled those after the fact.

Re: Macaronesian Lepidoptera list
About Euchrysopes, Melatinini, Biblini and Coeliadinae: the question is about their position in the taxonomic order. And now the same problem is with Euremini. Thanks for the author of C. amata!

Macaronesian Lepidoptera list
I apparently have too much free time so I compiled a list of Macaronese lepidoptera with distribution information for most of the islands. The file is available for download at http://www.jkt.1g.fi/Xtra/LepMacaronesia_(vrs2).xlsx . The main sources were: - Borges, P.A.V., Costa, A., Cunha, R., Gabri...

Re: New Tamron macro lens.
As the formula is completely new, I would wait for reviews before ordering the new macro. The same applies to the new 70-200/2.8 with VC & USD, which interests me more than the new 90.

Re: Dead Swallowtail!
A couple of things to remember when relaxing samples: Too long exposure to high humidity will produce mold and/or grease the sample. A drop of Thymol will prevent the first problem. I prefer short exposure to humidity and a very small amount of 10% ammonium hydroxide (215-647-6) injected into the bo...

Indeed. The tooth in the white band in the hindwing is quite clear. I don't think A. ilia has that at all.padfield wrote:that looks like a purple emperor, not a lesser, to me!

Plebeius optilete? The only thing that doesn't quite fit is the relative straightness of forewing outer edge.

Re: Moths ID + Fly/Beetle
I agree with Philzoid on second: it is either that or very close relative.
For the fourth I'll tentatively offer Cydia pomonella and for the last I'd go for Tortricidae. The genus could be Cnephasia or close to it.

Re: gorganus or britannicus?
Firstly, of course, although britannicus represents a small, isolated population, gorganus covers a huge geographical area with great variation over its range. Some forms look closer to britannicus than others, though of course the only relevant forms for this discussion are those in sufficient pro...

I doubt the first moth is possible, but the second could be Epirrhoe alternata or Spargania luctuata.

Re: Monselice Italy
Looking at Google maps I'd say the Parco Regionale dei Colli Eucanei is a pretty good starting point. That's a few km North to North-West from the town. The little hill Montericco just North of the centre should make a nice short walk too. Later in the summer I wouldn't miss Lago di Garda, but it is...
