Dingys usually have at least a partial 2nd brood and I can recall one day last year seeing Large , Small , Essex , Sil...

Re: 2013 - Butterfly winners & losers...

Speaking locally ( Worthing and surrounds ) , Holly Blues did not have a bad year at all and Small Blues had a phenomenal first brood and a decent 2nd brood . Speckled Woods had a tremendous year and Common Blues a good one despite 2012 making everyone think that name was a misnomer . The butterfly ...

Re: What has made this a good year?

As I have posted before , all the butterflies we have seen this year ( except immigrants ) came from eggs that were laid last year . 2012 was of course ( supposedly ) a very bad year for butterflies but in reality it cannot have been that bad , they must still have been about , bred and laid eggs ev...

Re: August 2013

Ok this is not a very exciting report in terms of rare butterflies seen but perhaps of interest to some . For some months I have been monitoring the butterflies on a patch of waste ground just up along Tarring Road to the west of West Worthing station . The patch is around 10 metres wide and 200 met...

Re: Goldie M

Does anybody know if there are BHS in East Blean Woods? Goldie, Sorry to disappoint. I do East Blean a lot and there are no Brown Hairstreaks present, not even a release. To the best of my knowledge BHS is absent from Kent and has been for many years. It would be nice to see them back but with the ...

Re: June 2013

As I have posted before it is astonishing that often when a butterfly has had a " good year " it is immediately following a " bad year " and of course the butterflies in the " good year " have come from eggs laid in the " bad year " .

Re: June 2013

A very good 2/3 hours spent today at Castle Hill NR Woodingdean , Brighton . The day started well at home with Holly Blue , Speckled Wood and a very worn out Painted Lady on Grand Avenue Worthing . Butterflies seen at Castle Hill were Small Blue circa 100 ( probably many more present ) surely a reco...
