Flutter of red Admirals
Hi I thought this video might be interesting for those who haven’t seen this sort of behaviour. It’s a first for me and I found it very interesting. One normally sees this on Ivy bush or a buddleia It’s a Flutter of Red Admirals collecting fermented sap from the base of an Oak tree. http://www.youtu...

Like I said I have seen these butterflies twiddling their antenna in one of my videos but that twirling is as you say interesting and as David M says they do smell & taste sugar with their feet . Perhaps she thought this tasted bad

Female Red Admiral
I wonder if any one can tell me what this red Admiral is doing with her front leg. This happened in a split second and I have caught it on camera. The frame before has the same time and the leg is perfectly still and resting slightly back on the flower

Yes. Thanks for all help and suggestions
The reason my Small Tortoiseshell is so pale is because it has not had sufficient sun to warm up and regain it's full colour from after it's hibernation

I have captured a Small Tortoiseshell today and the thing is along the top of the wings the bars are all white and black as opposed to the first bar being white and the rest black and yellow black and yellow bars. Could this be a female please?
