Re: New UK Butterflies team member

Welcome, Gruditch, I'm sure you'll continue to do a great job. Please, whence 'Gruditch'?? :? It seems a rather gruff name, which does not to fit with your beautiful photographs, or am I just being thick? Do tell.

Tony.

Re: Plain Tiger?

Hi Pete and Guy and many thanks. The links were very interesting. I don't know what it is about butterflies, but we all seem to be linked by a joy in these beautiful and ephemeral insects. Moths are great, but they just don't 'do it' for me in the same way. I have just spent a delightful half hour w...

Re: Brown Argus or Female Common Blue?

The BA is my number one favourite British butterfly. I always think that it is a smaller, somehow neater insect than the CB. It also has a quite different flight pattern. (I anticipate a raft of photographs of A. agestis var. giganticus  )

Re: A UK Butterfly Calendar 2009

Good thinking, Neil. A wider 'butterfly' appeal to Jill and Joe Ordinary, and not too much of the arty-farty, should also make the enterprise more viable financially.

Re: hollyblues

Thanks, Felix, that has answered a question that I have long pondered. We have very healthy populations of both broods of HB close to where I live (Stafford). There is plenty of flowering Ivy, but no Holly at all in the immediate area. Stafford HBs are obviously totally hederaphagic (Oooh! Get him! ...

Grafton Wood produced a very good count today. Many Speckled Woods, Gatekeepers, Meadow Browns, Small Skippers, Small, Large and GV whites. Also 4 Peacocks, 5SW Frits, 2 absolutely fresh Red Admirals, one Painted Lady ( my first this year) 5 Small coppers, 2 Brown Arguses and a male Common Blue. Sev...

Sadly, I'm weak and very susceptible to a good grovel , but don't worry, I have three votes :?: :?: :?: . I'm more worried about this month's comp - I can't ask my lovely wife to pose again, although she does quite often qualify as 'wild'. :D . God, we'll be back on the bloody beetles soon :lo...

Thanks for your comments, guys - I especially liked butt-erfly! If it appears again, I may try a wide-angle shot. As no one has ventured a possible name, may I hazard ' Uxor Callipygea', or is that the name of the nectar source?

Hi Pete,

In fact Gwenhyfar did it all for me - I just copied her version and - Hey Presto - in it went. I still have not the foggiest idea how she did it.

Go to 'Get a map', which is free from online OS services. Click on the 'I want get-a-map now' button. Place the cursor on the UK map in approximately the right place and keep centering and clicking as the scale of the map decreases. Eventually you will have a map of about half/sq km and you can cent...
