Possible Peacock

Post by Lesley »

Apologies hit the wrong button to compress, obviously about as good at the photo lark as I am at identifying butterflies! Lesley

Nothing much wrong with it as far as I can see ;) - OK it has lost a lot of scales and the wings are a bit torn up, but it will still be able to fly and should be able to breed next spring.

There have been a fair few knackered/transparent Peacocks around this year. Is this caused by the appalling weather, and if so, why do they not tuck themselves up somewhere un-exposed, like they do when they hibernate?.

More likely damage caused by birds pecking at the eye spots.

I saw a pristine condition Peacock today on my transect at Malling Down, Lewes, East Sussex.
It even wondered if it could have been a freshly emerged 2nd brood?
There were reports of a possible second brood last year.
