Glanvilles at Sand Point

Friday 25th - weather warm and sunny but with a fair northerly breeze. About 10 newly emerged Glanville Fritillaries observed at Sand Point so worth a visit but sadly no Wall Browns. This is the second year I've failed to see any.

Re: Glanville Fritillary at Wrecclesham, Surrey?

Not that it helps the Surrey site but I'm off to Sand Point tomorrow - principally to see if the Wall has recovered from a very bad year last year - I'll report any Glanville sitings.

Re: La Brenne - September

Paul et al

There were a few Adonis around - many thanks.

Take a look at the Fritillaries and give me your thoughts guys - it's much appreciated.

I've added the Large Chequered Skipper - just 'cos it's a beaut.

Thanks

Re: La Brenne - September

Thanks Lee

I was thrown by the complete lack of green on the underside of the wing of the Fritillary. I'm pleased the other is not an Argus. There were Baton Blue around but most in poor condition - this one wouldn't open it's wings....

Re: La Brenne - Identification Please

Chris - (and Guy P if you're around). Just returned from nearly two weeks in La Brenne - and despite the weather's best attempt to subdue butterfly sightings we had a great time. Obviously this was June and I can't be specific as to the species that you might see in September but I know a man that c...

Re: La Cabane du Pommier

Thanks Guy As ever you are a font of experience and knowledge and I'm endebtted (if that's correct). All of this species were seen in the same area - a damp marshy meadow and therefore I guess that would be the correct thing to assume. Please watch this space as I need confirmation of two more shots...

Re: La Cabane du Pommier

Guy Many thanks for your comment. Upon reflection you may well be right. I have posted three images all taken in the same locality and there may well be a difference - I shall be very pleased if the newer specimen is the Idas. Please do your stuff Guy. And I have posted a few more shots for the rest...

La Cabane du Pommier

Having read the series on last of the summer wine - I thought I'd add my latest trip. We've had a great summer and in order to extend it just a little longer my wife Susie and I booked a week with Dave Simpson at his Gite in the Dordoyne, near Lalinde (if you know the area). Details of this can be f...

Re: July Sightings

Just back from two of the hottest weeks I can remember in Norfolk - unfortunately as most butterflies were on the wing but My first silver-studded blues at Kelling Heath (20+) Dark Green Fritillaries at Horsey Gap (50+) although only 6 pics. and Swallowtails of course - seen at Strumpshaw Fen, Hicki...

Re: Blue Lagoon, Milton Keynes

Chris Obviously this will be weather dependent and my visits to this site were mainly to photograph the Duke of Burgundy. According to my dated pics I have seen them there between the 1st and 3rd weeks of June - so I suspect longer than this - and if we have a good summer there may be a second brood...

Re: May 2010 sightings

Hi all as usual weather has not been that good down here in the south-west but in sheltered locations when the sun does appear Walton Common has delivered. See below for my first Dingy Skippers (8), Brown Argus (2) of the year and some Grizzled Skippers (double figures). I also lost count of the num...

Re: April 2010 Sightings

Sat 24th at Walton Common.

Weatherman predictions were off kilter (as usual) although it was warm.... the promised unbroken sunshine turned to be very hazy.

About 20 Green Hairstreaks seen over a two hour period and just the one Grizzled Skipper - which I found with a little help.

Re: Old records, eg Bernwood

Jack - me again ( see Pretty corner). I actually started my interest in photographing butterflies while living in Oxford and Bernwood was one of the best sights around. The Duke was present up to the time they opened the M40 - circa 1990ish. I had recorded one small colony and taken pics for about t...

Re: Pretty Corner, Sheringham

Jack I frequent the Stalham area but know Pretty corner well - and unfortunately have never seen any Fritillaries there ( or White Admirals). The best site for WAs near there is Holt Wood where there is an abundance of Honeysuckle..... and it's a very nice walk. Great county ... sadly not the best f...

Duke of Burgundy

Having only seen one site (Totternhoe Quarry) of these seemingly particularly difficult to find species I was pleased to find one or two late individuals last year at Rodborough Common but they were all very tatty. If anyone visits Rodboro this year and sees any please post it - I usually look in th...

Re: Sandringham, Norfolk

Andrew Welcome - I'm sure you will benefit from accessing this site. As a regular to the Norfolk area - but further east - I have visited many of the areas along the north coast. If you can stray as far as Holkham there is a good site for White Letter Hairstreaks. My other regular haunts include Win...
