Hi - I wonder how much set-aside is worth for farmers. I have just been looking on the DEFRA web site and there is confusion of documents about this subject. If you look at the guidelines (54 page booklet) it must be very confusing. Don't we just need some simple guidelines to follow! Like don't cut...

Thanks Pete,

It would be great to think that we could do something really positive to help our butterflies and moths (and birds and dragonflis etc etc!!)

Cheers

Been following this thread with great interest - think it is a great idea. I assume from the sounds of the organisation and the enthusiasm that is going into it that this will be a resounding success. Would you then be thinking of doing a similar thing "up north"!! I would be happy to help...

There is also a companion series hosted by Chris Packham on BBC4 - 7 o'clock on Sunday but I think it is also on later on a Wednesday. Last night they showed Black Hairstreak at Rockingham Forest (didn't kno it was there!), and Northern Brown Argus at Castle Eden Dene among others. Well worth a watc...

Didn't think I had voted before either but as I can't now I must have! I have been a member of BC for ages but have to say that this site (UK Butterflies) is where I spend most of my time on the web.

Well done Pete for a great site.

What an interesting thread! I too have a problem with collectors / breeders taking anything endangered from the wild. Surely it is common sense that should prevail here - it is presumably "ok" to take Peacock larvae (but not thousands!) for example as they are relatively common but I don't...

Thanks again for your help

Sorry Pete my apologies - you are correct! What I had remembered was a previous post : Hi Martin, I suggest you stick with some of the commoner species, since there's quite a debate about the merits of releasing rarities and the potential problems this can cause! In terms of livestock, you could try...

Question in that case is that if he did release them why only two and why not keep them as breeding stock? From the photos I have seen they looked reasonably fresh. I am more disturbed about the "alleged" collecting on HWT reserves as I have bought from this supplier in the past - in fact ...

Milkweed

I have been offered some Monarch larvae and have been trying to find somewhere that can supply the Milkweed as foodplant. Does anyone have any knowledge of where I might be able to buy some from? I don't think that the larvae will eat anything else unfortunately!

Thanks

I have been buying livestock from Worldwide Butterflies and Butterfly Connections for a while now without problems (apart from the current postal strike!!) but have found another livestock supplier - Lepidoptera Breeders Association. Has anyone had any experience in dealing with them? Thanks in anti...

Aston Rowant & Whitecross Green Wood

We had a fantastic day out yesterday (decided to take the day off work as it was forecast to be a nice day) firstly at Aston Rowant and in the afternoon at Whitecross Green. I have never seen Silver Spotted Skippers or Chalkhill Blues before - we don't get anything as exotic up here in Derbyshire! O...
