Re: June 2024
Hi, was it Durlston you were at, and were there plenty of Lulworth's out? I'm planning a trip down to see this butterfly this year. Thanks. I visited Lulworth itself, parked in the village and walked up Bindon Hill and along and down to the Cove and there were very good numbers of Lulworths. I'm no...

Tailed blue (romania)
Had this called as provencal short tailed blue. Collins range map makes that sound unlikely although a friend in bulgaria says he sees them regularly outside the collins range. I think it looks better for Eastern Short Tailed Blue as it lacks the more prominent comma shaped line on the hind underwin...

Re: is this Knapweed Fritillary (romania)
Thanks David. I’ll look into that too I’d be happy with knapweed, glad I got the general Id right. I did find some underside photos in the end but the wings were partially open so they have sunlight shining through

is this Knapweed Fritillary (romania)
Was noticeably smaller than a Queen of Spain it was next to but it's wings are in a bit of a state. No underside photos available I'm afraid.

Blue from Romania
From a petrol station just north of bucharest. With my british head on I had these as Silver Studded at the time. My guide said that some of the accumulated phone photos showed the tibia enough to discount it. Now I have access to the actual camera photos and collins a lot of me is leaning back towa...

Re: Clouded Yellow Romania
Thank you Guy, no it's not disappointing, we saw lots of the group over the trip so it's just trying to file photos. They definitely didn't look out of the range of CY I've seen in the Uk (or in spain for helice as i've not seen that form in uk), I guess my guide was mistaken, he was very good on bu...

Re: Clouded Yellow Romania
Looking at a female from about 50m away I wonder if they may be pale clouded yellow rather than the two species that were supposed to occur there.

Clouded Yellow Romania
unfortunately I only have this underside shot. In the carpathians near Bran/Zarnesti According to our guide CY itself is very uncommon there but Berger's and Eastern Pale are common. The closest I can see in Collins is probably male Danube (because of the low amount of spotting on the forewing under...

Re: Chequered skipper
Thank you everyone. Saw dozens at glasdrum and unlike the spbf they settled a lot. Including on the floral pattern on my daughters leg.

Large Heath on Skye
I found a skye wildlife webpage that says Large Heath is fairly common in the south of Skye. I'm staying there next month (although I fear too early for scottish large heath) but does anyone have any experience of seeing it there?

Mallorca in May
Got a long weekend in Mallorca at the end of the week. I know it's not really a butterfly hotspot and I'll primarily be looking for birds and reptiles but wondered if anyone had any info on what I might see or decent sites. I'm based on Puerto Pollensa but will also have a half day in palma and I'm ...

Re: Tenerife - 7th to 12th March 2023
This was a great read, I visited in February last year and even then there were small whites everywhere. I only had one dedicated day of hunting for wildlife and it was surprisingly rainy on that day unfortunately, cleaned up the endemic birds though, but I really loved the ones that I saw, the Cana...

Chequered skipper
I’ve booked a couple of days in fort William on the last weekend of May in the hopes of seeing Chequered Skipper. Does anyone have any sites or information they could share about the best places to try I’m then going on for a weeks family holiday on Skye. If anyone knows any good butterfly or dragon...

Skippers from Cyprus
These are all different individuals at the same site (hillsides above Germasogeia Dam Akrotiri cyprus) last week (first week of november) My guide had the ones that he saw as Pygmy (the one under the yellow flower first photo) both on size and markings, and it does seem the most likely of Cyprus' sk...
