Re: French Pyrenees Sep 21

Thanks, all. That's really helpful, the PC's off at the moment, Guy, but IIRC the blues were at about 4800ft - hope that helps.

French Pyrenees Sep 21

After another trip to the mountains I have a couple of butterflies that I'm unsure of. I'm no expert but I'm wondering if the yellow fellow is a Brimstone or some sort of Clouded Yeallow. Of course, if I ask, "Is it A or B?" the answer will be "C"... The blue(s), I think are Adon...

Re: Lincs butterflies

Many thanks, Guy and kevoh. I'm sure I've been seeing them for decades but this was the first time I noticed them and there were so many on that patch - an attractive little creature.

Lincs butterflies

Seen today near Lincoln, I'm fairly sure the darker one is a Gatekeeper but I'd be grateful for confirmation (or to be chopped off at the knees!). The other was very small and I can't find it in my books - there are so many in the Collins that a novice like me is overwhelmed very quickly so I turn t...

Re: Tiny caterpillar

Thanks, Pete, now I've an idea where it came from - we have a large willow nearby in the garden.
Thanks again,
David

Tiny caterpillar

It was so hot that I was sitting in the shade reading when something blew onto my book. I thought it was a smut until it started moving along the page and all my reading stopped. I know they must be small on emerging from the egg but this was only just over 3mm in length and I've never seen anything...

Help with a couple from Italy please.

Images captured last week in northern Italy, lowland in the Po valley. I'm guessing (!), being more experienced in birds than butterflies, that the larger orange chappy is a Fritillary - Silver-washed? The other has me stumped and I'm still finding the Collins guide a bit intimidating. Any help with...

Thanks, David, I've searched on PBF and to my inexperienced eye that seems spot on.

Two from the Pyrenees

After another visit to our favourite mountains I have a couple with which I need some help. I thought No 1 might be Queen of Spain Fritillary but it doesn't seem to match the Collins guide - am I barking up the wrong tree? Sorry about No 2 - it's against the light and there's not a lot of detail sho...

Re: Three from France

Thanks, Guy! A local butterfly expert was saying that numbers have been very poor in the Pyrenees this year also. A late spring followed by a blistering hot spell then storms seems to have affected much of the plant life and therefore other nature. The bird life was very sparse with many expected bi...

Three from France

Back from another visit to the French side of the Pyrenees and I always seem to come here with identification questions... 0153 (third image) was at about 5400 ft, the other two much lower altitude, perhaps 1500 ft and all were seen in early September this year. 0646 (first image, is this a moth rat...

Two from the E Midlands, July

Hello again. I saw a couple of butterflies the other day and am seeking either confirmation or correction please. It's more likely to be the latter because I still find the sheer numbers in the Collins guide intimidating. _DLC9549.jpg The thing I noticed about the first one was that it appeared to b...

Re: Ringlet - or am I barking up the wrong butterfly?

Hi Mark, Many thanks for the explanation as well as the confirmation. As a very inexperienced butterfly watcher I find this forum incredibly helpful and I was taking a real chance with this question as, in previous times and in other forums, I've asked, "Is it A or B" and the answer has co...

Ricglet - or am I barking up the wrong butterfly?

Photographed today in Lincs and my first thought was Ringlet. Now I look at the Collins and think, should it not have 3 eye spots on the fore wing and, if it's a male, should it not be a lot darker, and shouldn't the white border to the wing be much more pronounced. Or, am I on the wrong page - agai...

Re: A Luxembourger

Thanks, Mark, that's very helpful which I must say is more than you can say for the name - scarlet indeed! I think it must have been in a butterfly house. Thanks again.
