Re: ernie f

Another day not butterflying. Persistent showers and drizzle for the most part. So here is a past pic of another American butterfly that can sometimes be found in the UK. Yet again I took this in the USA.

Re: ernie f

Thanks, Janet, Goldie and Wurzel. I am having a bit of difficulty with my camera after dropping it. It seems to want to focus off-centre so now I have to compensate by moving my camera off target, focussing and then moving back on target. Its annoying, but it was the way I got these latest brostreak...

Katrina - great pics of the Scotch Argus and Grayling. I found the Grayling habitat pic funny - its looks like they might be on holiday and using those beach-huts!

Great pics of the SSSkips and Adonis Blues but the real gem is the Gif of the Hummingbird Hawkmoth. Wow.

Re: Goldie M

Goldie - I am in catch-up mode. I had to step back quite a long way in your diary to do this and found you had got a WL hairstreak pic better than any I was able to get this year. And, right at the end of the last page, a pic of a white and you can see its markings through the wing. Love it.

Re: Neil Freeman

Amongst all your fine pictures of the last few posts I am most envious of two. The two Speckled Woods on the Blackberries and the 2nd brood female Holly Blue with its wings open. I am especially keen on your Holly Blue because I have been chasing them about and have had no luck with a female open-wi...

I didn't realise how much I had missed from your diary, Dave. I had to scroll back to the start of the current page! I am a sucker for backlit photos and you got a whole bundle of them, Brimstone, Holly Blue, Clouded Yellow, etc. I especially liked the SSS pics including the one of the eggs!

Re: Wurzel

Crumbs, what a lot of fine Lulworth Skips you got there - particularly the close-up of a mating pair and love the one lunching with you under your parasol. It doesn't get better than that.

Trev - Catching up. Love the Wall brown entitled "The Stand Off", plus all those great Brown Hairstreak pics. I am really pleased you got all of the Sussex hairstreaks now just like you said you wanted a few posts back. Great news.

Noar Hill - 11th Aug 2018 If I thought the end of the Brown Hairstreak season had finished early at Noar Hill I could not have been more wrong. I visited again today and found an absolutely fine, fresh female (only my second here this year). She landed on the hedgerow beside the last entrance gate t...

Re: ernie f

Thanks, Wurzel. Of course at the time I didn't know for sure what I was taking a picture of. I knew about some of the UK butterflies of course and had heard of the Camberwell Beauty but you don't expect to see the same species in a country so far away (even if it was on the east coast of the USA). I...

Re: ernie f

I have been waiting in for a delivery today and by coincidence it rained most of the day so I wouldn't have had a great time butterflying anyway. Instead I continued my trawl of old pics. Today I thought that I would collate some I took before I got into butterflies. I came across this one from a ph...

Re: ernie f

Wurzel, David - Re the DGF. I have looked on this website's abs and on the specialised website for UK aberrant butterflies and I admit to being no wiser. It looks a bit like the photos shown but mine does not appear to have a green wing edge. Janet, Goldie - Re Small Butterflies. I guess it must be ...

Re: ernie f

So, much needed rain today here in Hampshire but of course it limits going out butterflying. Instead I decided to tidy up my pictures and delete a few as I was running the risk of busting my back-up hard-drive limit! I got to the folder containing my Dark Green Fritillary pics and found two from a f...

Wurzel - There are a lot of mini Common Blues around but this was one of the smallest I have ever seen.

Dave - Yep - got that rain at last - its been coming down most of the day but no big thunderstorms. Don't have to water the garden for a few days now. :D

Re: ernie f

Noar Hill - 8th Aug 2018 I found another new Brostreak today. This was yet another male and was actually fairly fresh, having no nicks or abrasions. It was nectaring on the Hemp Agrimony half way down the first bridlepath between the lay-by and the last gate into the reserve. This brings my annual t...

Re: ernie f

Wurzel. I must admit I have never seen a 2nd brood Adonis at Old Winch until the second week of August but thought since other forum members were having luck elsewhere the Adonis's might be here early - but no. Unless of course I have been extremely unlucky.

But that one Brostreak pic you got was a cracker, Neil. It has to be worth a few blackthorn scratches. (next year you will have the pic but the scratches will be a distant memory) :D
