Re: Success in the garden!

Thanks for taking the photo Susie, it certainly gives me a good indication as to what to look out for now in my garden.

Re: Day of firsts

Super photos Denise! I, too, am new to butterflies and get the same thrill as you when seeing a 'lifer'. Dingy Skipper, Green Hairstreak and Duke of Burgundy got my heart beating faster on Sunday, when out on a field trip with the Sussex branch of Butterfly Conservation. I am taking a day off work t...

How does it fly?

I saw this Peacock flying around yesterday and just wondered how much longer it was going to be able to stay airborne. I have never before seen such a damaged butterfly that could fly so well. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v694/Pollym/?action=view&current=Old-Peacock.jpg&t=1210537139916 ...

Re: Grizzled Skipper Pics

Great excitement for me today - I saw my first ever Grizzled Skipper :D Like Neil, I went to Mill Hill, near Shoreham, West Sussex and did not expect to see much as the weather was fairly sunny but with a brisk wind. The steep walk down to the lower slopes was certainly worth it - so glad I took a d...

Re: More April Butterflies

They certainly are "decent shots" Neil - great captures!

I was chasing a female orange-tip around Warnham NR, Horsham on Sunday (a sight to behold) and managed a few sharp but 'blown' shots.

I am not sure where the upper River Arun is; do you have a grid reference please?

Re: Lantana

I have only ever seen Lantana grown in a conservatory in this country. With it being a tropical perennial I am not sure how well it would grow outside in the UK unless it was treated as a half-hardy annual, given a very sheltered spot and put out after all risk of frost had passed. In Africa I have ...

Early morning photography

Now I know this may sound like a daft question but it comes from a newbie  During the Photographic Workshop today (organised by Pete, Mike Young and the Hampshire BC) a number of people suggested that the easiest time of day to photograph butterflies was in the early morning before it was warm...

Re: 2008 Photographic Workshop

Yes, it was such a great day. I learnt a lot, had a laugh or two and didn't fidget in my chair (well, we were sitting down a long time). It passed by too quickly but I guess that is a sign of concentration and enjoyment. :D Many thanks to all concerned in organising such a wonderful day. You might l...

Thanks so much for all your replies. So I have to go and buy a notebook, set up a database, dust down my camera and then wait for some warm weather!! Can't wait for Spring!! In the meantime, I have been doing some reading about butterfly-friendly plants for the garden. That's my next project. Polly
