Re: Brown Hairstreak - Torquay Area
Hi, Preston Down is in my opinion the best site by far in the Torquay area and is very well known for its Brown Hairstreaks with females coming to egg lay in the Blackthorn hedges that form the boundaries of the grass down site.Nearest postcode I know is the Post office just up the road from the sit...

Re: 2023 - Large Tortoiseshell
Today , I had the pleasure of meeting Kelly Uren on a Cornwall BC butterfly walk event in Cornwall. Kelly happened to mention that she had a chance of a lifetime sighting last Sunday 9th July in her sisters garden near Cambourne. There were both a Small and Large Tortoiseshell together on on White B...

Re: 2023 - Large Tortoiseshell
Noticed a reported sighting of a Large Tortoiseshell at Croyde North Devon on the Sightings page of the Deon Butterfly Conservation page today. Rather interesting for the records, have no idea of its verification status, but still worth noting on this thread.
Re: June 2023

June has been warm and dry in Devon for weeks and the White Letter Hairstreaks were very early this year, started seeing them around the 10th of June and it seems a very good year for them and they are out in good numbers. But I was extremely pleased yesterday to witness a Pair mating, never seen th...

High and Dry
On an unassuming walk on Dartmoor today,to my great surprise I spotted a largish Fritillary high up in a very tall bush about 3 meters up, so got a quick snap before it flew off into oblivion.(Pointed to with my red arrow). Checking my photo tonight, and cropping it twice heavily to get a better vie...

SMALL OR GREEN VEINED WITE ID HELP NEEDED
Hi all, a warm sunny day in Devon at last, got my first Orange tip of the year and a very brief glimpse of my first White of the year. Just landed on a Dandelion, then to a Celandine , I got a couple of shots before it was off over the hedge. It was so fleeting I did not get a chance to see its under...

Hi Pete,
interesting to note a certain Helen Chaffe reported also seeing one in her Gloucestershire garden today in response to the Guernsey sighting report on Facebook .Wonder if anyone has followed up on that report.
Things are getting exciting,
Dave.

Re: Blue spotted White Moth from Jersey ID help
Hi Alan,
many thanks for the NY greeting and identification help, it's funny it's a Footman as it was spotted initially by the Hotel Doorman !
I will do some research on the species you have suggested,
Thank you very much.

Blue spotted White Moth from Jersey ID help
Now in the depths of Mid-Winter Iam going through my photos from 2022 of which Iam not sure of the species. This was an extremely fine Moth specimen which I photographed on the boot of the Hotels courtesy Bently car in July. It was a lovely ermine White moth with three royal blue spots, and also blu...

Thank you to Pauline and Mark for your comments, you are correct about Graylings Pauline. I witnessed a Pair of Graylings performing a similar display last year with both partners displaying open wings(see photo attached)
