Re: causes of aberration
I tend to agree about the weather effects during Pupation. This Spring saw record temperatures and endless warm days down here in Devon. I have never seen so many Aberrations reported during the Spring and early summer finding a couple myself. As to your wonderful Small Copper Ab sighting all I can ...

Washed out Holly Blue
Apologies for this late posting but I am afraid domestic chores have taken a precedence of the last couple of weeks. I spotted this unusual butterfly briefly on Bramble Blossom on a Devon coastal path on the 9th August whilst hunting for Clouded Yellows. At first in flight I thought it was a rather ...

INTERESTING OBSERVATION OF PURPLE HAIRSTREAK BERRY FOODPLANT
In the sunny weather earlier this week I had spent over an hour searching bramble blossom under a Purple Hairstreak " infested" Oak tree to try and get a close up photo of one nectaring. Not one appeared and so I was about to set off home with a failed mission when a group of walkers appro...

Vanessids in Lockdown. So Happy Together.
Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell seen lying together like this on a Devon Costal path today. I have never seen two different species so close together resting , maybe they were they in Lockdown ? Reminded me of that 1967 song by the Turtles " Happy Together". ( Who was that guy in the group...

PURPLE HAIRSTREAK AB. OR SUNLIGHT ANGLE ?
DSCN6180 (2).JPG Hi all, just seen and got a quick shot of this female ? Purple hairstreak taken in full sun at 6:40 this evening. I cant decide is she an Ab form with Purple only on left wing ? Or is it just the angle of the sun on her not illuminating the purple on the right wing. She flew off be...

Re: Geranium Bronze
Hi Chris, thank you for a most interesting Post. I live in Devon and one was seen here a couple of years ago, probably an import on a geranium plant. But I was lucky enough to see my first one in Seville this February ! I was not expecting to see Butterflies there so early in the year but it was a w...

Re: White Letter Hairstreak needing a Helping Hand
Hi Dave, yes I usually see them high up in the tree tops but once in a blue moon one will come down to nectar and last year I got a great shot of one at eye level on an Elm leave as shown. But to come down on the grass and then climb on my hand was probably a chance in a life time. I Last year my wi...

White Letter Hairstreak needing a Helping Hand
A small group of us had a unique experience yesterday (28/06/20) whilst searching a local park for White letter Hairstreaks that are regular visitors there each year. It was a rather cool and windy day and all hopes seemed dashed by the weather. Suddenly one flew straight down from high up in a near...

Many thanks indeed with your help on that and clarification of gender appearance. She was very yellow which foxed me,
Dave.

Aberrant Marbled White with yellow underside
Spotted this possible Aberrant Marbled With flitting around a local Devon meadow. Its upper wings were normal except for a noticeable thin yellow band to the upper forewings, buts its underside hind wings were patterned in yellow rather than Black and white. Any comments welcome.

Aberrant Meadow Brown Devon 2020
Whilst strolling down a quite Devon Lane on the 11th June this year I spotted this beauty on Bramble blossom. A rare find I think making it a perfect summer day. What unusual colours this specimen proudly displayed.
