Re: July 2024
A good day here for low nectaring WLH in the garden here in North Yorkshire, maybe due to strong winds(??). Here are a couple of shots, best seen by clicking on....

Re: Croatia 28/6 to 5/7
On reflection, looking at the Frit underside, it is pretty clear it is more consistent with didyma - thanks Guy for pointing it out!

Re: Croatia 28/6 to 5/7
Hi Guy, and Andy... I figured it would be uncertain, and I have no other shots to show. Any more thoughts would be welcome. I'll otherwise leave it as questionable. So to Graylings, even murkier... circe is plain enough but the other two, not sure. I am reasonably certain syriaca is represented, but...

Re: Croatia 28/6 to 5/7
Thanks guys The most common Frit was the False Heath variety, though I hoped fruitlessly for Assmans or Nickerls, so spent a fair amount of time chasing them. Melitaea diamina 230630 Melitaea diamina _ Croatia _48A3711.jpg I think this one is a female Lesser Spotted Frit, but am open to any discussi...

Croatia 28/6 to 5/7
An opportunity arose to visit central Croatia in late June-early July, staying near Plitvica National Park. The countryside there is "under" cultivated, bemoaned by the locals, but very welcome if you like butterflies. The NP is worth a visit for its waterfalls, but maybe not a special tri...

short-tailed blue???
I puzzled over this Alpine butterfly when I got home, eventually concluding the best fit was osiris ..... then I found this shot with a hint of visible underside if you expand and magnify it.... now it has not even vestigial tails, but what I can see of the underside suggests argiades .... anyone's ...

Re: ID request 2 - Erebia Haute Savoie

Re: ID request 2 - Erebia Haute Savoie
Thanks Roger.. I saw you don't have pronoe and I assume it's a way off your particular beaten track.... if ever you're Geneva way in early August I can point you to where these were to be found (in France). I hope Guy will express an opinion, but I'm interested you don't think they're aethiops . Len...

ID request 2 - Erebia Haute Savoie
I wasn't going to ask, but given Roger gave me his learned advice, I wonder if he will have a look here.... Elevation 1500m - species flying were pronoe , aethiops , montana and ?? others. I deliberated over these sizeable Erebia but finally plumped for aethiops . I do wonder, however, if they may a...

Re: Costa Rica
It really is a good place to visit Ian.
We did Tortuguero by road up to a point inland, with the last 10 miles or so by river boat as organized by the tour provider. We left the same way. I think one can fly in from San José.
I have a few more photos to show when I have time

Re: Costa Rica
You really can't go wrong! Any relatively wild spot excepting the rainforest floor will provide stuff to see, especially on any flowers. There are 3 environments, basically east, west and central. I saw most in the south-west around Manuel-Antonio, but the central area around Arunel was also good. T...

Re: ID request Swiss Erebia
I would also like an opinion on this one.... I think it is consistent with lycaon, Dusky Meadow Brown, taken at 1950m at Barage d'Emmoson. It didn't behave quite like jurtina and never settled wings open...

Re: ID request Swiss Erebia
Thanks Roger,
I think that's exactly what Guy will say.. lots of other tyndarus there, so it was the Brassy on the site, and the orange markings don't really fit mnestra, request was more for confirmation.... interesting individual though. Love your photos, as always
Paul

ID request Swiss Erebia
I am just back from the Haute Savoie and ventured into Switzerland occasionally. I took this photo on 8th August at the Barrage de la Grande Dixence, 2360 m, in the company of tyndarus - my query is... could this be mnestra , or possibly pharte or is it more likely a spotless tyndarus .... 220808 Ba...
