Re: Katrina

Hi Pauline, the WLH photos were ok but not great. I will need to check the photos more closely re damage. I know it had two chunks out of one wing even last night. It was certainly an adventurous butterfly crossing some of the busiest roads in Brighton. I hope it won't find the gardens too busy with...

Monarch Morning

The Monarch was still in the Pavilion Gardens, Brighton, this morning. I think its first appearance was about 9.15. Also seen were White-letter Hairstreaks. What a fabulous morning! I started by bumping into B. Rex who quickly pointed out a White-letter hairsteak. Then soon a man in a hat spotted th...

Ruthven Barracks

I thought I would post a better photo of Ruthven Barracks taken by my sister at the same time as mine. She has just won the Strathspey Heralds readers' photo of the week competition with it.

Re: Katrina

Thank you Pauline, Goldie, Wurzel, Bugboy and Maximus. I think I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. Today was a good day for seeing butterflies but not for photographing them. I started a bit late at Botany Bay . I think I saw two purple emperors on the ground but the first was in...

Re: Katrina

Thank you William, luckily we had been told that some Bee Hawk-moths had been spotted otherwise I might have passed it by.

Thank you Willrow and Goldie

I am adding a bonus photo from that day.

Wet Feet Dawn

Yesterday I went with my sister at just after dawn to Insh Marshes hoping to find roosting Northern Brown Argus. It had been raining the night before, the weather was sunny but there was pockets of mist. We couldn't resist stopping at Ruthven Barracks to take a picture on the way. We didn't find any...

Re: Katrina

Thank you Goldie, they certainly weren't easy to photograph. I think we were lucky finding what I think was a fairly newly emerged one which was more obliging. Also was helpful to have my sister who was good at spotting them!
Thank you Wurzel, I think they were still first generation Wood Whites.

2nd July 2015

Yesterday we went to Lochindorb to see Large Heaths. We saw a lot of Small Heaths and three Large Heaths (form Scotia) one that looked newly emerged. We also saw Golden Plovers, Toads, Red Grouse and a hare. We then went to a two ponds near Loch Garten and saw White Faced Darters in the first and Fo...

Insh Marshes 1st July

I went with my sister to Insh Marshes on 1st July. We saw one Orange Tip, several Small Pearl Bordered Fritillaries, numerous Small Heath and Northern Brown Argus and one Common Blue. We also bumped into some local butterfly enthusiasts who gave up some helpful advice about finding Large Heaths and ...

Re: Katrina

Thank you Bill. I have been enjoying your Large Heath photos - a species still on my list to see. I went to Botany Bay today hoping for Purple Emperors. None seen but I had a lot of fun following 2 Wood Whites around. I met several nice people on the way. I also saw about six White Admirals, 3 Silve...

More SSBs

This morning I first went to Chantry Hill hoping to see roosting butterflies but only found a Painted Lady. I went on to Iping Common. Arriving there about 7.15 I wondered if I would be too late for roosting butterflies having found nothing at Chantry. I however found 39 (36 males and 3 females). I ...

Thank you Wurzel for your kind comments - ditto Pete, Bugboy and Willrow! :D
Here is the uncropped photo which seemed amenable to cropping in a few ways.
