Re: Common Blue Question.

Steve, do you expect to have your questions answered within 24 hours on this forum? Not all of it's users will (or even can) check everyday. Please remember that it's not a public service.
Unfortunately I cannot help you with your questions.

Re: Pink larva

I think Felix is on the right lines. I'd say it looks like a pug moth larva. It's not a million miles from Lime-speck Pug (Eupithecia centaureata) which feeds on scabious flowers. However, I'm not sure that my opinion will carry much weight after making a balls up of that dragonfly ID this week... :...

Re: id help from Studland please

Yes, the fly is Bombylius sp. and not a moth (note the lack of antennae).

The dragonfly looks like a female Black-tailed Skimmer to me, but from this angle I'm not 100%.

I enjoyed that a lot, and my folks found it informative too which was good! Well done to those involved.

Roger, I think you were right about the Dryad!

Re: Binoculars for butterflies

Steve's advice to try before you buy is wise. I'd recommend looking at second hand pairs, you can often pick up decent ones in auction. I use a pair of 8x30 Adlers for butterflies, these are small enough to hang around your neck above a camera. For general use I use a pair of Swift Audubon MkIIs (8....

Re: golf course information

That looks promising Matsukaze. One area in which you may be able to play an important role is in the conservation of the white-letter hairstreak by planting elms resistant to Dutch Elm disease such as 'Nanguen' Lutèce.

Re: golf course information

Hi Dave, welcome to the forum, I'm sure you'll be able to get some help here. Whereabouts is your golf course? This will make all the difference on what to plant etc.

Like that, but if it could appear at the bottom of the forum page it'd be more useful :)

Saying that, I now see that the reason I missed it was that it only comes up if you login, which I don't do unless I have something to say....

Pete,
you may have already considered this, but it could be really useful if the forum homepage had a recent posts section. Here's an example of what I mean (nr bottom of page):

Re: Survival Zones

Sounds good to me. Here is a site with a list of the landscapes: http://www.wildlifeextra.com/go/news/butterfly-zones729.html One of the zones is Dartmoor National Park and the Marsh Fritillary is one species for which this area was chosen. I've never had any luck looking for it within Dartmoor - on...

Re: Mystery 7

Hmm, I feel I should be able to get that Fritillary, even though their uppersides are always confusing. Now you've mentioned the shape and spotted nature I'd say it looks like Brenthis daphne, but my book says it lives only up to 4000 feet. Maybe it lives higher up these days? I bet I'm still miles ...

Re: Mystery 7

Well, some are easy for you Guy! Here's my quick guesses. Bear in mind I have very little experience of non British butterflies_ From left to right: A blue. Not a clue which genus, Mellicta sp. Possibly a High Brown Fritillary, Melanargia galathea or even M. lachesis, A Copper. Possibly Heodes, Coen...

Re: July 10th > Onwards

Had great fun today at Ebernoe Common, Sussex. In total I saw thirteen species of butterfly: Brimstones, a Comma, Essex/Small Skippers, many Gatekeepers, even more Meadow Browns, Large Whites, a Marbled White, Peacocks, a Red Admiral, Ringlets, a Speckled Wood, quite a few Silver Washed Fritillaries...

I saw a number on SE Dartmoor today, but only 'possibles' in the Teign Valley two days ago. I think you will be in luck next week.

Re: Priddy Mineries under threat?

CANINE is hosted by a member of the BEC (Bristol Exploration Club). Their HQ/Bunkhouse is situated next to the Mineries by the public footpath from the South. Personally, I don't think that the Hounds would be exercised on the Mineries, although what is now a quiet spot (enjoyed by a number of users...
