No High Brown at Gait Barrows as of last Weds when I did the transects (warden being on holiday) though NBA, SPB and DGF were present. The weather since then has been unfavourable, to put it mildly.
As we all know, despite the topic title, Gait Barrows is in Lancashire.......

Re: Pearl-bordered or Small Pearl-bordered?
Small Pearl-bordered. Look at the left forewing. At the top it has the number 730. All Small Pearls are number 730!

Re: Lens hood?
Rather than buy the expensive hood, why not get one of those folding rubber ones that attach to the filter thread? Pull it forwards when you want to use it, fold it back when you don't.
Re: June 2012
Today in cloudy 20c conditions I saw Ringlet and the first Grayling at Gait Barrows (Lancashire), with Large and Dingy Skipper (the Dingy still looking fresh), Meadow Brown, Dark Green Frit (no High Brown), a few SPB's and Northern Brown Argus. More DGF, plenty of SPB, on Whitbarrow.

Re: Field Guide to Micro Moths of Britain & Europe
My copy came about a month ago, and I used it straight away to identify some micros in the moth trap. I'd used UK Moths website before, but never knew where to start with it. The guide in this book shows you which group to look at once you've checked with the 'key' section at the front about palps a...

Re: How are numbers doing?
Hi chaps, With all due respect, you wont see many butterflies whilst driving around...I have always found more whilst on foot. :D Iain. Quite a lot of my casual records are drive-by sightings. Depends where you drive, I guess. On country roads with uncut verges, you can get quite a few in most years.

Re: buddleia diseases?
I had parts of the buddleia at my old house die. The fungus Judas' Ear was seen on the wood, but that could have been either the cause of the plant's demise or an opportunistic infestation on wood that had died from something else. Other plants in the same part of the garden had previously succumbed...

Re: Best organising and editing software?
I use Photoshop 6 for editing - old but does the job and has more tools than even the latest versions of Elements. I've never used organising software as such. All my photos are stored on an external hard drive (and backed up), I just created folders within folders using windows and allocate picture...

Re: buddliea for holly blue?
I once watched a holly blue lay on buddleia in the garden at my old house. I netted the twig and kept looking for a larva, but there was nothing.

Re: Delayed emergence
I don't know Pollard's work on the white admiral,so can't comment. I think it could be unrealistic anyway to compare a species like the white admiral that overwinters as a larvae, to a Duke that has been in it's pupal case all winter. Duke's were on the wing 3 weeks early in 2011, so pupation was al...

Re: Delayed emergence
I'm involved in a project to boost the numbers of Duke of Burgundy at Gait Barrows by captive rearing and release of stock from both Gait Barrows and a site in Cumbria (to increase genetic diversity) and my experience this year makes me sure there's a point of no return, and that the majority of my ...
