The grey one is probably a red underwing.

Re: Time lapse help
I know that some camera models come with software that allow connection to a PC from which you could run such a schedule. If you're thinking of maybe recording a butterfly emergence from a pupa in a controlled environment, that would suffice I expect, but out in the middle of a hillside it might be ...

Matsukaze, probably your best bet for Grayling in the Mendip Hills region would be Crook Peak. Good to hear the second brood walls have emerged at Draycott Sleights.

Re: "Wrong" lenses
I shot a family event at the local nature reserve today, but took time out to find a few insects as well.
This was shot with the bog standard 18-70 kit lens: and this one with the 70-210 zoom:

Re: "Wrong" lenses
with a Canon 500 close up lens. I didn't know you had one. I've been using and recommending one of these for ages. Good aren't they? I sometimes use a 1.4x teleconverter with my 70-400 zoom but only when I really need the reach with semi-static subjects. With an f5.6 maximum aperture reduced by the...

Canon 400D, Sigma 150mm, Jessops monopod and a lot of effort. A good shot, well earned.

"Wrong" lenses
In recent discussions about what's the best lens to use for butterflies the invariable solution quoted, at least for DSLR users, is some sort of macro lens. But quite often, the right lens happens to be whatever's stuck on your camera. When looking for reach, I flex my somewhat insignificant biceps ...

Many thanks Felix. This could be worth a weekend visit. Is the windmill west of the car park that's near the top of the hill?

I often see one or two of these in a summer, conspicuously settled on a light coloured wall. I wonder why they do this as it's hardly camoulflage.

Re: Altered Images !
I can't remember who it was but I recall someone suggesting carrying a clothespeg or similar to clip an offending piece of foliage out of the way while shooting, then to release the peg afterwards, thereby limiting habitat disturbance. It's a good idea, and one which I have forgotten to use ever sin...

Re: New to photography....
Nice one, Lee. However, if this is a crop, I suggest it might be more pleasing if you amended it to leave a bit more space in front of the butterfly's eyes so that it's looking into the picture rather than out of it. Keep it up, and you're right to get to grips with f-stops, i.e. aperture settings, ...

Re: August 2009 Sightings
Another trip to Shipton Bellinger for brown hairstreak with Jerry and Denise today saw plenty of active males in the main master tree near the Tidworth Road end but no females came down to play. Absolutely zilch at the Shipton Bellinger end. We must lack the Gary/Lisa knack. The weather wasn't too g...

Try later in the day. I think this may be why we were lucky with the brown hawker. Emperors will stop to eat a catch too, which is how I caught this male, snapped on the same day.
