Moth Id please

Post by Dave R »

This was on the side of my house, quite a long way up so couldn't get a good luck with a naked eye, but also quite big for a moth I would say

I don't really know, but my guess might be a dark "Clifedn Nonpirel": http://www.ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?bf=2451 I can't see if it has blue underwings or not, based on this, but I can just about make out what might be a blue line on underwings.
Cheers all,

It's a Red Underwing, I'm afraid, not the rarer moth.

I often see one or two of these in a summer, conspicuously settled on a light coloured wall. I wonder why they do this as it's hardly camoulflage.
