Re: Small Tortoiseshell- Favourite Photo 2018

This started as just a rather distant 'grab shot' during walk in Bucknell Wood but, when I was looking through my photos for this thread, I rather liked the 'King of the Castle' appearance:

Another photo taken in a relative's wild garden. It was such a pleasure to see so many species enjoying the space set aside for them!

Re: Small Heath - Favourite Photo of 2018

I find myself with quite a few images of this much-overlooked little butterfly, mostly from my local patch, but one has to stand out as a favourite Yes, it certainly stands out :) With modern cameras, we've become almost blasé about open wing shots of butterflies such as the Brimstone, but the tops...

Re: Small Heath - Favourite Photo of 2018

Mine only earned its place here because it's the only Small Heath photo that I took in 2018! Nevertheless, I think it's an attractive species, even though it's usually seen when trying to find something else. I find it intriguing to see how this one has managed to find footholds on the various dry g...

Cannot help, Jack, but one of the problems with the 'new' approach to diaries is that entries, other than the owner's, don't appear in the 'Recents' list. I've only seen NBA at Arnside Knott and those aren't the real white-spot version!

Re: Goldie M

After a bright, sunny start, it clouded over and then large snowflakes started falling - so it reached at least this far south.

A Grey Wagtail, which is a regular Winter visitor to the garden, appreciated the food I put out and a Song Thrush also visited during the snow.

Re: Silver-washed Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2018

I knew I would have to choose one of my Valesina photos from Bucknell Wood but which one?

After dithering for some time, I have chosen this one for its lightness, glittering in the early morning sun - almost a Platinum-washed Frit!

Re: Silver-spotted Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2018

I went to Bald Hill at the western end of the Aston Rowant reserve, well away from the roar of M40 traffic, with low expectations. It was cool and quite a strong breeze was blowing across the slope, After a while, I realised that there were, in fact, good numbers of Silver-spotted Skippers, keeping ...

After a sunny start, it has clouded over here, so the 'may' is very weak indeed in my case

We shall miss all your tantalising photos of butterflies in the snow but it seems that you are finding plenty of good birds! I liked that first shot of the Kingfisher by the river :)

No Butterflies at Wisley this Year

My usual "Winter fix" is 'off' this year. The RHS say that "We are temporarily resting the Butterflies event as it has an impact on the plants in the Glasshouse at RHS Garden Wisley. We want to give the plants a break and concentrate on caring for them and bringing new and exciting pl...

Re: Ringlet - Favourite Photo of 2018

My favourite was another photo taken during a family birthday party in a relative's wild garden (see also my Marbled White favourite). It was a beautiful sunny afternoon and many butterflies were fluttering amongst the wild flowers, including this Ringlet:

We had a great day, including the tropical butterfly collection in Plas Pilipala, but this Red Admiral was nectaring in the walled gard...

Re: Purple Hairstreak- Favourite Photo of 2018

At first, I thought I was going to have to 'pass' on this species and then remembered my surprise encounter at the local garden centre! My wife told me that there were lots of Whites mud-puddling in the areas where plants had recently been watered. This was at the height of this summer's hot drought...

I found this Orange-tip nectaring on Blackthorn blossom on the Dryham Lane section of my patch, North Cave Wetlands, on 13th May. My struggles to get the 'perfect picture' here, with the butterfly framed in such an amazing setting, were what finally tipped me over the edge into buying my Sigma macr...

My photo is one of several I took on an early Spring visit to my local Dry Sandford Pit reserve. I find that Peacocks almost always provide good results so I chose a shot which I feel is a little 'quirky' in its setting.
