Re: Butterfly Valley in Turkey

Hi I go quite a lot and stayed over last year and had a great time. You really do need to stay overnight as after lunchtime you don't get any more of the boat trips and you can take your time in the valley without hundreds of people on flip flops on a route march to the waterfall. The bungalows are ...

Re: Wisley, etc

As stated above I don't have a problem with butterfly events such as Wisley as the butterflies have a reasonable life. I have more difficulty with farming butterflies for things such as jewellery and paper weights where they are killed almost immediately they emerge to ensure they are in pristine c...

Re: Wisley, etc

I did worry, at the Natural History Museum butterfly house last year, that there were a lot of butterflies in a small space and there was a lot of what appeared to be territorial interaction going on. Must be stressful at some level to the animals? They do have the potential to be great educational ...

Beautiful Red Admiral yesterday near Cirencester, sadly no Brown Hairstreak eggs which were what we were really looking for! Still that's my first butterfly of the year.

1. taking 3 friends (1 who does butterflies, and 2 who need more convincing) Swallowtail hunting by boat (non drivers have to be creative when butterflying and you can moor at Hickling Broad!). 2. Heddon Valley for High Brown Fritillaries, I started following butterflies after a National Trust holid...

Lovely day at Prestbury Hill today. Lots of Marbled Whites and Gatekeepers, plenty of Dark Green Fritillaries and a Small Blue colony like a cloud of glittering confetti. Silver Washed Fritillary, Small Skippers, Small Heaths, Large and Small Whites, Red Admirals, Speckled Woods, a Comma and some Pe...

Re: Wall Butterfly at Crickley Hill

If you have an OS map and you are around Prestbury Hill then there is a footpath up Harp Hill and around the Glenfall Estate that is usually pretty productive. Beautiful meadows surrounded by woodland and some good hedgerows. I hope the weather is ok for you.

there's a butterfly conservation trip there for Walls on the 24th so I should think it is a good site. Not been myself yet. I'm off to Fermyn Woods this weekend.

Natural History Museum

I popped in to the butterfly house at the NHM yesterday and now i'm pondering.... It was fantastic to see literally hundreds of big tropical butterflies on the wing but it seemed rather crowded. There was lots of chasing, assuming territorial behaviour. Is it a very stressful environment for the ani...
