Re: Winter social 2016

Unfortunately due to family commitments I won't be able to make it either. I hope you all have a great time and hopefully see you next year :-)

Re: Black Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2016

Sometimes butterflying is very easy. You park by the site, walk 200 yards to the hot spot, and there are 4 or 5 of your target species sitting quietly nectaring on bramble :D These were taken 2 minutes apart at Glapthorn Cow Pasture on July 2nd this year. black-hairstreak - 1 (1).jpg black-hairstrea...

Uploading photos

Hi, Can someone give me advice on how to upload photos to this site in a way that maintains their sharpness? Whenever I upload a photo it always seems to come out a bit fuzzy, even if the original is pin sharp. Would it help if I crop to a small size (e.g. 800x600) and give it some extra sharpening ...

Heath Fritillary at Blean Woods

Hi,

Does anyone know if the Heath Fritillary is flying at Blean Woods yet? When does it normally start?

Re: Small or Holly Blue

Thanks Guy. I was pretty sure it was a Small Blue, I had seen it in flight before it settled. I just wanted to double-check before berating the ignorant folk on Butterflies UK :)

Small or Holly Blue

Hi,
hb4.jpg
Is this a Small or Holly Blue? I say it's a Small Blue but a couple of people on the Butterflies UK facebook group are saying it's a Holly Blue.

Taken at Hutchinson's Bank on Sunday 5th June 2016.

Re: Purple Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2015

The highlight of my butterfly year in 2015 was this encounter with a freshly emerged male Purple Hairstreak sitting on the path at Botany Bay on July 6th. It hardly moved in 30 minutes so I assume it was drying its wings. And then I walked off and saw a grounded Emperor only 3 minutes later :D phs1....

How about this one, perched (or glued?) on Neil Hulme's finger? Taken on a grey showery morning in Abbots Wood, 9th May 2015.

Re: Winter Get-together 2015

Hi,

This year I'm thinking of catching the train to Shawford station. Can anyone tell me what the walk to the pub is like? Specifically is there a pavement and street lights? I don't fancy a half-hour walk back to the station along the side of a busy road in the dark.

Thanks

Faded or abberant?

Hi, is this a Meadow Brown abberation or just a faded one? Seen at Steyning Rifle Range yesterday (12/08/2015).

Larvae on wild rose

Hi all,

I saw these larvae today on what I think was wild rose, at Fairmile Bottom in West Sussex - any ideas? They were about 5 or 6 mm long.
