Pupa ID query
Hello, When setting up the patio furniture for the spring, we discovered this pupa on one of the chair legs. I’m sure it is either Small or Large White but cannot convince myself which one. Some confirmation would be appreciated 7FBA139C-8787-48C0-BF5C-5D386479B209.jpeg 3243131D-39BB-4AB8-8CC3-D7ADB...

Wurzel, Slop Bog. I thought you’d made that name up, it’s brilliant. Lovely SSB photos, especially the observations with the ants.

Neil, What a great way to start a Sunday by reading your diary. Fantastic photos of the SPBF. Some interesting variations in their markings too. The scenery is to die for. I think that place is now on my to do list.

Guy, enjoying your Spanish diary. As a huge fan of Orange Tips I was delighted to see your photo of the desert Orange Tip, what a cracker. Your narrative reminds me of my younger days, chasing Orange Tips up and down country hedgerows. Normally they are a species that don’t reward that sort of behav...

Haha, you should feel flattered by all the requests Ernie. I'll get a male to go with my female, if I stake out my location for long enough.

Dave, Nice photos of the Small Heaths and interesting how different their markings are. I sometimes struggle to photograph this species close up as they don't like being approached (unless I am very heavy footed)
So to get two of them, hats off to you.

Ernie,
Some great photos of the male Brown Hairstreaks. A good early morning species, that's for sure. I don't own a photo of a male yet, but they are on the wing in my area, so hopefully I might break my duck before the week is out. If not can I borrow one of yours
Kind Regards
Kev

Thanks Essex. The provenance of the Ipswich Brown Hairstreaks is up for debate, however they are a great butterfly to see. They have been around for a handful of years now and seem well established, using the A14 corridor between Copdock and Nacton.

Orwell Country Park, Ipswich - 30/7/20 Having encountered my first Brown Hairstreak of the year on my local patch, I paid a visit to another reliable Ipswich site. As is the case with this species, they can be very elusive and so it turned out to be on this day. However this site is excellent for a...

Thanks for the comments everyone. Mrs L certainly bagged some brownie points from me that morning, that's for sure. The following day beckoned with much improved weather conditions. Still cloudy but warm. Perfect conditions to go looking for Grayling. I visited Sutton Heath, Woodbridge which is a no...

David, Catching up with your diary and enjoying your Portland pics. I can't remember the last time I saw a Small Tortoiseshell on Buddleia, let alone a Large. Well done indeed. That's a cracking Brown Hairstreak too. I was fortunate to see a fresh female last week and they are stunning. Kind Regards...

Wurzel, Cracking photos of the Lulworth Skippers at Bindon Hill. Love your account of pursuing the Wall Brown. I can relate to that with several species  I know it's been a year for early appearances for many species, but is 21st May normal for Lulworth's to be on the wing? Keep em coming, Kind...

Hi Buggie, Just catching up with diaries and I'm green with envy at yours. It's been 'ab' central for you and they are all lovely, especially the Speckled Wood. I was lucky to see a SWF confluens last year and they are special. Have visited Hadleigh CP a few times during WLH season and not encounter...

Hi Essex, I'm loving your Chalk Hill Blue photos. It's been a few years since I visited Fleam Dyke. I usually do an annual trip to nearby Devils Dyke and see them, Last year I did a count of nearly 2000. Nice to see some 2nd brood Dingies amongst your photos too. Are the Cambridgeshire sites good fo...
