Re: June 2012
A tip-off from Alan Thornbury of Glanvilles in Surrey sent me scurrying back to Wrecclesham this morning for the fourth time this year. On the shady pathway lead-in to the site, a solitary Speckled wood flew on ahead as it had done on all the previous visits. This time I hoped it would be a good ome...

Re: June 2012
With (typical) bad weather approaching for the bank holiday weekend, the chances for me to get to see Marsh Fritillary in 2012, seem to be dwindling away. Saturday presented the best opportunity for a now or never visit to Hod Hill. And to help matters a work colleague (Clive) had the same intention...

Loved the Small Blue photos with the contrasting dusting of blue scales against the brown background.
The yellowhammer shot is smashing

Re: May 2012
The picture of the brimstone was taken with me chasing it as it darted from place to place at high speed; It is moving when I took the picture (they never landed whilst we were there) A great way to get upperside shot of Brimstones Debbie :) . This was taken last year at Old Winchester Hill with a ...
Re: May 2012
With a plan to see and photo Small Pearl-bordered Fritillaries, me and Isabella teamed up with Wurzel and Kitty at Bentley Wood. The weather appears to have gone from one extreme to the other so the butterflies were plentiful but very flighty   . And although we were having a smashing ti...
Re: May 2012
With reports of Glanville Fritillaries sightings coming in I thought I'd check out the Glanville site much closer to home at Wrecclesham. Although the weather was seemingly suitable the only butterflies I saw in over 2 hours searching was a Speckled Wood on the way in, an unidentified fly-by white a...

Re: May 2012
With good weather forecasted for the weekend, I took advantage by contacting Badgerbob for a butterfly meet on Sunday at High and Over near Seaford East Sussex. The chance of seeing Wall Brown "the pupa" and a new site was a big lure :) . My last sighting of this species was quite some tim...

Re: mummified caterpillar ID
Hi Phil, I use http://www.ukleps.org/ Thanks Chris, I used that site earlier this year when trying to identify my ruby tiger larva photoed in January (I was later reliably informed that it was a Round-winged Muslin moth larva (Thumatha senex) but there was no reference to it on ukleps). However thi...

Re: mummified caterpillar ID
My first imporession was they were snipe but I'm no expert when it comes to identifying waders. On consulting my Collins field guide of Britain and Europe I was initially drawn to the Red-necked Phalarope (can't be that they are rare aren't they :? ) and after discounting that species; Sander...

Re: mummified caterpillar ID
Thanks for your reply Wurzel. I've been away from my computer for a few days so sorry for the late reply  . The caterpillar is a difficult one. As it was found halfway up a grass stem my initial view was a skipper or one of the browns. The shield like structure behind the head might've been a ...

mummified caterpillar ID
In urgent need to get out and about and with good weather forcast for the weekend I took off to Wrecclesham with my daughter to get some much needed exercise and to hopefully see Glanville fritillary larvae. If my memory serves me correctly I've read they can be seen basking on their foodplant on wa...

Re: Wisley "Butterflies in the Glasshouse"
Thanks for your input guys. Searching the web I saw another explanation alongside the Fairytale one of a reference to the shape of the wing which appears similar to the wooden forms used by shoemakers to create new shoes. I could see how this might apply to Catanophele, but there are a number of spe...

Re: Wisley "Butterflies in the Glasshouse"
Yes, the patterns are quite different but the wing shape is more or less identical. Interesting name too, the orange band we can see but shoemakerDavid M wrote:You could easily be forgiven for thinking those were two entirely different species.

Re: Wisley "Butterflies in the Glasshouse"
Thanks Wurzel :) . That picture came out better than I expected as it was shot at relative distance (about 6 ft away) using the fuji compact on full optical zoom (x 10). Most of the butterflies were taken with both cameras (Fuji and my new Canon DSLR) and the compact (in my hands and in my humble op...

Re: Wisley "Butterflies in the Glasshouse"
With the butterfly event at Wisley set to close after the 26th Saturday was my last opportunity to see the missing species on my list and to improve on some of my pictures. So far all my visits had revealed something new and this visit was no exception. Numbers of visitors were down but thankfully t...
