Re: July 2012

Forecast for Sunday said best weather to be found West, so decided a meet-up with Wurzel at Bentley for Purple Emperor and woodland species was our best chance rather than Alice Holt. If Bentley wasn't going to yield his majesty then we had a contigency plan to go to Martin Down for Dark Green Friti...

Re: July 2012

I expect you're wearing the black-arm band today though... You're rtight there Wurzel  . Thankfully I didn't take Bill's (Willrow) advice and put a tenner on them  (double agony) so well done to Phil for finding a gap in the weatherand getting some WLHs. Credit should go to Mark (Tuts) Tu...

Re: Moths ID + Fly/Beetle

Hi BrockwellBee I have got hold of a trap myself and am enjoying trapping in my garden when the weather permits. There are plenty of moths out there so learning to identify them takes some considerable time. I'm pretty much a novice too having only got into the hobby last year. The last three of you...

Re: July 2012

Sunday: Met up with Mark Tutton (Tuts) at a site for White-letter Hairstreak nr, Portsmouth. The area beside a road had a line of suckering elms (not sure which type) behind which was a small untended embankment with lots of wild flowers. Almost immediately Mark showed me a hairstreak perched on a l...

Re: June 2012

A visit to Wrecclesham for Heath Fritillaries drew a blank as it did with Glanvilles too. Lots of Meadow Brown, Marbled White and Large Skipper with the odd Small Heath and Red Admiral thrown in made up the species seen. Sunny but breezy conditions ensured they stayed low down in the grass but also ...

Re: June 2012

On a blanket blue-sky day  :) I decided it was now or never for Large Blue and drove the 110 mile to Collard Hill. On entrance to the site immediately evident were the Meadow Browns which were the dominant species. 2012.06.24 IMG_4833 Meadow Brown.jpg Large Blue were also out in good numbers-...

Re: June 2012

Great 3/4 shot of the Large Blue there Bill :) I was going to say Pollenia but Niel beat me to it  . I have a Panasonic Lumix G series and cannot get photos anywhere near as good as other (FZ) Panasonic users :( . As a result I rarely use the Panasonic and instead stick with my bulki...

Re: Wurzel

Hi Wurzel. Nice pictures and interesting points :) . I took some pictures of Marshies at Hod Hill this year and noticed that some individuals don't have a distinct contrast between the yellow and orange cells making me think my photographs were not up to scratch. Perhaps it is as you say, to do with...

Re: June 2012

Apologies for late post. Fathers day and good weather to boot meant time for anther recce at Wrecclesham to check on whether the Heaths were about. In the end all the Orange butterflies I checked turned out to be Glanvilles, perhaps the Heaths will be later :| . Although sunny the windy conditions m...

Re: June 2012

With recent sightings of Glanville Fritillary at Wreccclesham this had to be high on the list of places to go. On Wednesday amidst the showers and bright spells I'd only seen 2 butterflies but today (Saturday) was much much better. After meeting up with fellow UKB members Tuts and Wurzel :) (EDIT yo...

Re: June 2012

This one is the 'brownest' I have seen so far, posted in my diary a couple of days back. Have to agree with you there Neil, that's the Brownest Common Blue female I've seen in a while :o (but sill no chance of getting it mixed up with a Brown Argus  ) It was entirely by accident. She's actual...

Re: June 2012

I wonder whether these people are actually involved in the local breeding programme. After all, this species is relatively easy to breed and all it would take would be a few gravid females. Perhaps that's why the colony has persisted? I hope you are right there David and I'm jumping to conclusions ...

Re: June 2012

How much has the site changed since last June? Is it still effectively unmanaged or are there fences, trenches and/or signs of disturbance everywhere? It has hardly changed to be honest. If you feel bad about climbing a small fence you should bear in mind that there is another un-restricted entranc...

Re: Springwatch

Thanks Guy.
(Even more of a tangent)

By the same token if we were able to take a T-Rex from the past and place it into the present (as in Jurassic Park), would the most ferocious dinosaur known to man just simply keel over and die due to insufficient oxygen :?:

OK I'll get my coat.

Re: Springwatch

Thanks fpor that information Guy

I must admit I didn't think the oxygenation in insects was an entirely passive event and thought that some abdominal 'pumping; in insects such as 'seen in' dragonflies contributed to the exchange of gasses?
