as well as a foreign driver who had forgotten or was ignorant of the fact that our speed signs are in miles and not kilometres per hour! Yep! That grounded greenstreak was a beaut and another first for the season :D put Philzoid onto the butterfly once he’d located my holler, and head on my w...

Re: millerd

Nice Speckled Bush Cricket Leptophyes punctatissima Dave. Have seen plenty of adults but not the nymph (it lives up to its name with those markings) :) I think your damselfly is a female Banded Demoiselle ( Calyopteryx splendens ) which has lighter coloured wings than the v. similar Calyopteryx virg...

Re: millerd

Plant I think could be Charlock or White Mustard (Sinapsis arvensis or alba)

You'll have to find me an Orange-tip caterpillar when we next meet up in the field

Re: Wurzel

Brilliant day Wurzel and that aberrant was a little beaut :D :!: . Most of my calls follow the line of “where did you put the” ... “or have you remembered to” … it’s worth chancing your arm and leaving the phone behind in the car once in a while   . Great shot of the Speckled Yellow .. ...

Re: millerd

Great Small Pearls Dave and a nice lateral underside shot :) Finally, I tracked down a very small (1 cm?) Brimstone caterpillar on buckthorn - I'm sure there were many more there somewhere. Took you less than 2 minutes to find it tbf, and thanks for showing me where to look :) I was told on a previo...

Re: Trip to Hutchinson's Bank (and Chiddingfold)

It was a great day and the Commophila aeneana "Orange Conch" (though many do, I don't mind using vernacular names for the Micros) was a real find :D . Both Large Blue and High Brown would be great, but as I've never seen High Brown perhaps it should take priority in the event of not being ...

Re: millerd

Was great to meet up with you on Sunday. You've posted a lovely array of Marsh Fritillaries there :) .

I think we saw 20 species in total at Cotley which is a fantastic count on a single site :)

I think Trevor might be onto something

Trip to Hutchinson's Bank (and Chiddingfold)

From Sun 22nd A meet-up with Wurzel and a trip to Hutchinson’s bank had been in the pipeline for some time. From the reports coming in we were confident we’d get to see our quarry. For me this would be the first time for 3 years in the UK since the demise of Wrecclesham and drawing a blank on my las...

Re: Trip to Bentley Wood

Not sure if either is ovipositing tbh .... at least I can't see it in the photos :? . However being low down in the grass there is a good chance that they are searching for egg-laying sites. For the second picture it could be common rock rose (Hypericum sp.). For the first I'm not sure. There were v...

Love the detail on that Green-veined White Wurzel, not to mention the Orange-tip shots  The in-flight shot of the male OT from distance is superbly sharp :)

Trip to Bentley Wood

The late emergence of the Pearl-bordered fritillaries this year had delayed my annual pilgrimage to Bentley. I initially made plans to go on Sunday but ended up in two minds whether to go Saturday and save Sunday for a possible trip to see Sunderland’s last (celebratory) game at Watford :? . However...

trip to Butser Hill

Butser Hill is a site I’ve become hooked-on over the last couple of years. Usually it amounts to my second foray of the season following on from Bentley Wood’s Pearl-bordered Fritillaries. But this year the weather has been odd, dare I say dire for butterflies and for us butterfly enthusiasts trying...

Re: April 2016

Two butterfly species seen today at the Bronze-age burial mound, Woking. Only my 2nd and 3rd species so far this year, the first being Small Tortoiseshell in Sunderland on Good Friday. Things slow to get started around here. Moth catches are very much down too. 2016.04.10 IMG_5699 Comma, nr. Bronze-...
