this creature appeared on my desk this morning ( in Cambridgeshire )
could anyone say what type of Cricket/Grasshopper it is ?

No they're actually rather common , they're just normally better at putting their camouflage to use by lurking in the undergrowth!

Must admit, I've never seen one of these myself and though at first that it was some foreign 'invasive'.

i was worried it would turn out to be a grasshopper

That creature could field at either the long leg boundary or in the short leg position couldn`t it ?
