i went over today to have a look round. the main path opposite the gliding club has had extensive logging work recently. hundreds of oak trees either side plus all of the bushes where the Emperors perched etc have been removed in a swathe extending 20m to the left & right ( ie 40 m total
)
the other path to the West has not been affected.
i did see a couple of White Admirals in the blighted area.
i expect the Emperors will be out by the end of the week

Hello Charles,
Do I take it that you're not expecting to see many Emperors along the affected (main) path?
I was thinking of going to Fermyn at the end of next week (June 28/9) but maybe I won't bother now
Do the Forestry Commission liaise with Butterfly Conservation at all?
Cheers

the main path looks like Passchendaele now
there will be plenty of Emperors on the other path and in the Lady Wood area, so you can still enjoy a visit next week.

Thanks for the info. Did you go to (I think it's called) Lady Wood, just off the bottom right corner of your image? That's been a good spot for emperors in the past - wondering if it's been managed also?

I'm worried to hear that there are problems at Fermyn Wood.
In fact I'm coming home to Leicester from 30/06 to 03/07 and was hoping to visit these woods for the first time.
I think I will still pay a visit and see what can be seen, possibly on 01/07.
By the way, if anyone nearby knows the woods well and would like to play the butterfly guide for a foreign tourist (me)
, I would be grateful.
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Charles,
I expect there will be other people around who may be willing to give pointers.
Hi David,
Can you believe it, it is easier for me to see a Purple Emperor near my home town in England than in France
.

Yes. Very easily, Chris. They're not present in the Mercantour so I miss out on them too, although
ilia has made the odd appearance to compensate.

you do not have to walk great distances to see the Emperors
there was plenty of activity in the car parking area. one Emperor flew inside a camper van.
the last sighting of a grounded Emperor was at 3:20pm....
